Can a coughing fit cause an ICD to fire?

Last Wednesday, I started having cold symptoms, coughing and sniffles but the cough was magnified tenfold by Ramipril and an underlying chronic cough (not yet diagnosed). The coughing fits were so intense that I got dizzy and almost vomited when I had a coughing fit. I attributed the dizzyness and nausea to the cold but last Friday on February 7th, I got my first shock 6 weeks after my ICD was installed. I went to the emergency room and had another coughing fit and I went into a very brief v tac...

Well, hubby had his 6 mo. checkup yesterday & the docs are so pleased....they said he's got the "Ferrari" of all defibrillators (it's a St. Jude thing), and with any luck (i.e. no shocks) the batter should last 5 years. We go to the cardiologist/electrophysiologist/internist every three months, and so far he's doing ok. Still needs to get down another 35 lbs, though. I think he's doing great for a guy (a musician, yet) who will not eat a veggie, and only does his walking in the evening, and i...

Bathroom scales

I bought some new bathroom scales and noticed on the instructions that they are not to be used if you have a pacemaker. I asked why this is and was told that bathroom scales can only be used if you have pacemaker that measures weight only - - not body fat etc.

Hi people! My husband had a cardiac arrest in July, flatlined by the time he got to hospital, but they worked on him for 17 minutes & got him back. That was the longest flatline the hospital had to that point, with no brain damage. Then 17 days in ICU and a week in rehab to learn how to walk again, etc. His systems had begun to shut down. Prior, I had noticed his legs were a bit swollen, but I just assumed since he was a big guy, and had diabetes II, that it was just due to his weight. He's...

Working on drilling rig

I am new to this forum and I got an ICD implanted last October 2013 after a cardiac arrest.

I was working on an offshore drilling rig. I had done a new medical and that was all ok. The doctor wrote on that same certificate that "working in a surrounding with very weak electromagnetic field". When my company received this certificate they gave me my notice and told me that they couldn't guaranty my safety on board the rig. I had asked prior to get a test done but they didn't.

New ICD

My name is Don and I had a St Jude ICD fitted on December 31,2013. I'm 49 years old and on December 23, I thought I had a bad case of heartburn but after taking some antacids, I was feeling worse so I had my son drive me to the ER (should've called 911 . that's another story) and I was admitted to the hospital for 9 days after they did a cardioversion to get me back on rhythm. The next day, my doctor told me I was lucky to be alive since my heart rate was at 250 bpm because I was suffering a Vta...

Hi everyone im a 28 year old male that up until recently I have always had a healthy heart with no issues with high blood pressure or anxiety. I have had chronic back pain for about 5 years now cause my a work related injury so had been prescribed gabapentin for the nerve pain. Over the past 2 years I had gradually increased my doses to compensate for the increasing back pain. Eventually I got to the point I was taking way too much I decided to take myself off of it. New ICD

Hello! I have had a pm for since 12/1/12. At a normal check up my EP found that I had had a 63 sec episode of V-tach. He put in a icd 3 days later. The night before last I was laying down and I felt 3 distinct pluses or beats or something. I also felt my incision site and it was warmer. I didn't think anything of it, then an hour later it happened again. This time it woke me up. I am going to call my dr tomorrow, but I'm just worried. Any ideas?

Getting Defibrillator on 12/27/13

I am wondering if anyone with end stage renal disease and takes hemo dialysis has a defibrillator?

I am on the UNOS kidney transplant list for over 3 years and don't want to be passed up if I have a defibrillator. The nephrologist indictated that I will get a call for a kidney transplant within 4 months.

Please let me know your experiences if you have kidney disease and a defibrillator and on kidney transplant list.

Respectfully Submitted,
Dr. V.

New IDC

Good Day,

I had my IDC implanted on 10/11/13, on 11/9/13 I was shocked 3 times within 5 mins. I fell to the ground, I really lost control of my thoughts and emotions. It felt like someone was attacking me and there was nothing I could do about it. My husband heard the 1st shock from another room and when it was trying to keep me calm (poor man I scared him to almost death) he felt the 3rd shock. Bottom line I did not rest my arm enough (I was reaching upwards, backward, forwards e...

Sinus node removal

Hi everyone, it has been awhile since I have posted but I'm looking for any answers I can find. After 7 ablations which included both sinus and av node I am still having problems with the sinus node. After seening the dr today he has possibly suggested a total sinus node removal and installing a epicardial pacemaker on top of the heart. He has to talk to a few of my other drs first to decide what to do but said this may be what they have to do to help me. Has anyone ever had that done? Just a fe...

The pacer systems are really very reliable. The main problem is the incompetent programming of them. If yours is working well for you, get on with life and enjoy it. You probably are more at risk of problems with a valve job than the pacer.
