Rugby

Hi,

My friend has recently joined up to a ‘Rugby Club’ where you play Rugby matches and learn skills etc. She says that I should join and I really like the sound of it, actually! I’ve tried other sports that are similar to Rugby such as Gaelic Football but I never really got the hang of it! Let’s just say, I am not really the sporty type! 😬However, the only thing is my doc says I shouldn’t play contact sports because of my pm. I’m guessing R...

Exercising with Heart Failure?

Hi everyone,

I'm 35 and had a pacemaker fitted in September last year. Things were fairly normal for a few months and then I was admitted to hospital with a 23% left ventricular function, so heart failure, then arrhythmia, and have been in and out of hospital, and basically housebound since January.

This is due to miocarditis, probably caused by a virus, though months of tests have brought no clues as to possible culprits. As there's been no change in my heart function. I&...

angiogram

I had an angiogram procedure on Monday this week and later in the afternoon had a small bleed, eventually the hospital said this was probably a vein that was clipped during the operation - still scary when you start bleeding from your groin!!  The good news was that all my arteries were clear and now I am awaiting an MRI scan.  My question is that I have been very careful and now as I am into my fourth day and climbing stairs as normal and no more bleeding, would it be okay to start...

Heart rate monitors

This may have been asked and answered; if so, I'd appreciate a link to the appropriate area.

I have a St. Jude CRT-D. Previously, I had two Medtronic ICDs (the first was replaced after the battery was depleted; the second was replaced to allow placement of a CRT-D).

I need to monitor my heart rate while bicycling. Nothing based on blood flow (e.g., wrist monitors) works, although they work while sitting still at home. When I had my Medtronic ICDs, my heart rate was properly me...

Activity / Exercise Trackers (Fitbit, etc.) compatability

Hi everyone, I posted a similar question in the "Interferences" section but then thought this may be a better category...

I have a Boston Scientific D140 ICD and I've heard mixed info on activity trackers such as a fitbit, etc. causing interference with ICD's.  I'm trying to get back into exercise and I liked using a fitbit and wondered if anyone can help clarify or share any info with me on their personal experience.

Thanks! :)

Chest pain possibly pacer?

So I’m 31 got my pacemaker 2 years ago following complet heart block after open heart.  I had it upgraded to a dual chamber about a year ago.  Since then everything cardiac wise has improved, rarely do I have any pains from CHF symptoms.  Over last week or two I started getting sharp burning sensations in left chest on left side of chest wall is where it feel like it’s coming from, the pains get so instense occasionally that my pec muscles flex or spasm.  The s...

Heavy Bag Muay Thai Workouts

I had a pacemaker installed this week and I am wondering if I will be able to train Muay Thai with a heavy bag after the required healing period of 3 months.  I usually workout for ten, two minute rounds, with one minute rest between where I punch, elbow, kick, and knee a 150lb bag. My concerns are as follows:

1) I hit the bag hard - Is there a potential of knocking a lead off my heart? Should I reduce punching power to the bag? Just tap it?

2) The arm motion...

Alternative Therapies

I live in Wales and have had a dual pacemaker for 5 years. I have some other health issues which maybe resolved with reflexology but the practitioner wants me to find out first if I am able to undergo the treatment.

Has anybody any information or had any experience with it pleae ?

Pacemaker

Hi to all of you. I' m from England too - Portland in Dorset.  Had my dual pacemaker fitted 6 weeks ago. Just wondering if it' okay to start lifting arm above head and exercising ie  Zumba and interval training? I am walking quite a bit but quite wary about the leeds coming out as I don' want to have to go back in hospital.  Would appreciate any replies. The only follow up appointment I've had since the op is the pacemaker check. This gives no reassurance the wo...

Wahoo Trackr Bluetooth heart monitor

Newbie here - had my St. Jude single lead ICD installed this week after a sustained v-tach event..that I tracked with my fitness monitor.

What a great website and community!

I've spent a couple of hours reading this subforum, the interferences one, and a bunch of general web searching to figure out whether or not it's harmful to use this chest strap monitor. St. Judes FAQ: 'cellular won't affect device...but be conservative and use the other ear.' Nothing refer...

Golf

First off, thank you to everyone in the club who assured me that time helps heal most things associated with having a PM.

It has been 65 days since I got my PM, and yesterday was the first time in 3 months since I last joined my golfing buddies on the course.  As someone who has played for over 40 years, I was initially very concerned that my golfing days, at least my good golfing days, were over.  Not true!

Granted, I continue to feel little aches, pains,...

OPTIMIZING MEDTRONIC SETTINGS FOR EXCERCISE

I have had an ADVISA installed since November, 2015. During the first few months several adjustments to settings eventually arrived at fairly ideal pacemaker responsiveness, yielding a steady 140 to 148 bpm during jogging, (at about 10 minute per mile pace). However, I have not been able to achieve the same responsiveness during bicycling nor mountain climbing. I assume it is because my body movements do not generate as much accelerative force compared to jogging. So my questions are:  &...

Boston Scientific minute ventilation problem

Does anyone else have this MV problem? Tech turned off my MV (safety concerns). I am a cyclist and MV is important to me, and I understand there will be no fix until October. I can only achieve pulse of 135 now where I was seeing 160 before. It makes a difference. Also does anyone have a different Tech other than the one provided by BS?  Over the 10 plus years I have had a pacemaker I have had at least 10 maybe 12 different techs, and only 1 really knew anything about setting up my PM. N...

Ran today

I ran for the first time in over 4 months today and it went well.  In October I was diagnosed with ideopathic non-ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy. I had a stress echo that showed an EF of 15% (!!!) which shocked everyone because I have been a regular runner or swimmer for many years (I am 63).  During the time leading up to the stress test I increased my pace and distance to "blow the test out of the water" - I had no symptoms and recovered quickly from my runs, so no one...

Heart rate monitors

I bought a Fitbit recently mainly for the heart rate function while running. It takes a radial pulse off the wrist.  Some monitors use a chest strap. I took the Fitbit back because while running it said my heart rate was 155 average and going to 164 at times.  That's impossible because I felt fine and that high of a rate would be unsustainable.  But, here's the question.  Since I have A flutter and some A fib and a PM perhaps these devices aren't capable of tak...

Time off after operation

I’m having a PM installed soon. Doc is very vague as to how long I need to wait before swimming. l Normaly lap swim for 1hr. I’m getting indications it will be months, not weeks. My layman’s common sense says once the incision has scarred, the lead ends would be anchored.

Any guidance would be most helpful.
