i have been thinking lately about the replacing of my icd. i am due to do this soon. my question is can they refuse to give you a new icd? my ejection fraction is good(45) but my icd does pace my heart at times. i am going in for a nuclear stress test next week. just hope they are preparing me for the icd replacement. my voltage is down to 2.62 volts as of june 22. seems to me they are kinda dragging their feet on this. what does everyone think? thanks--tony

The VA & ICD's

Tony: I could not understand your question till I went back & read your previous thread on Stress Tests.
The VA (Veteran's Administration or Dept of Veteran's Affairs) operates under a different environment that the civilian world, I understand (I'm also a Vet), but they probably will not "Refuse " you a replacement ICD. If your ICD history indicates that you do not need it any longer, they may not want to put one in. That is a totally different colored horse!
You need to ask why they did the Stress Test on you. From your description of the explanatory letter you rec'd, it is most likely to determining if you have clogged arteries. You must come right out & ask them why!!!!!
If it seems like they are dragging their feet, they may well be - replacing an ICD is not cheap, so no organization w/ a budget wants to do it needlessly.
Knowing the VA & its procurement practices, they have a negotiated deal w/ the MFGR's for a dramatically reduced price on PM/ICD's due to the volume they buy for nation-wide use in the hosp system. But they still are not cheap. We are not yet to the point where they are refusing them when needed.
If you read a lot of threads, there are many people who have asked essentially this question. You need a confrontation (polite, of course) asking them exactly what is going on. I read a certain amount of stress in your post that will only be relieved by getting the answers.
