Defective Pacemaker

Just recently had to replace my pacemaker (model #5370) because of a "defect". The surgery this time took alot out of me - can't seem to get my energy level back and I'm unable to walk long distances. Has anyone experienced this? It might be that I'm expecting too much too soon. My surgery was just last week. Would appreciate any comments or advice you might have to offer. Thanks.

Cass,

Any surgery can take a lot out a person, but unless you PM replacement involved some complicatons I think you should feel betterr after a week. It sounds like to me like you may need to have the PM checked. The symptoms you mention are symptoms I would expect to hear from a person that did not have a PM, but needed one. My suggestion is to contact your doctor and tell them how bad you feel. A 20 min checkup coud make a world of difference for you.

Wishing you the best

Mine was replaced as well

I had to have my Medtronic pacemaker replaced after just short of three years because of a defect. But in fact it turned out that one of the leads was actually defective and drained the battery from my PM. I now have three leads in my heart - 2 attached to the PM and one just doing nothing. The point is, my recovery after getting the replacement PM and the new lead inserted was much longer than the first time around. Maybe this isn't normal, but for me it 4-5 weeks before I began to feel like my old self again. Just to be safe, get a check up and see if everything is working right. Good luck.

Sorry guys, I never got back to answering your questions because it's been a while since I've been on the site. My last posting referred to having my pacemaker replaced because of it was defective. The problem ended up being the leads had somehow disconnected. My doctor had to go in to remove the old leads and replace them. Surgery was successful and all seems to be well. However, just recently I've started having pain down my right arm and tingling in the fingertips of my right hand. Along with that, I've had sharp stabbing pains across my upper chest. My pacemaker is located on the right (and my doctor placed it there because i am left handed). I will be going in on Monday (2/8/10) to see my cardiologist, but I need to know if anyone else has experienced this sort of episode. I ache sometime almost contantly and then there are days It is intermittent. I have no ideas what to expect from my office visit, just wanted to share and get some feedback.

Thanks for your help.

I love this new part of me, and very, very thankful that this technology exists and I know that it's all only going to get better over time.
