My Medtronic was put in on Dec. 12, 2011. My resting heart rate prior to surgery was 40 bpm due to 40 years of running. They set the device to 70 bpm at rest. My target heart rate while running was 110 bpm. Now it goes up to 130. Anybody out there have advise on this. Should I ask they set the resting heart rate to 50 or 60 bpm so the top end don't go so high.? Thanks for your help.

Frank,
I've had intermittent episodes of a-fib since 2001 and on Rx Amioderone. I asked they get me off this toxic med. Nothing else worked so they put in the PM to control the Bradycardia and now taking Solitol to control the upper limit. Even though the 35 to 40 bpm where caused by all the running I've done the Cardio Doc says it still (they think) was the cause of a-fib.
Thanks for any advise.
mysteries of rates

My resting rate was low too, around 40-50. Also quite fit. Now with the PM in it has increased to around 70-80. My PM has been set to kick in at 50. My card. said my rate was too slow, also I was having flatlining (no beat for 4 secs periodically). I am only using the PM 3% of the time. New to all this so like you trying to get my head around rates and certainly dont want tablets. Now having tests to see why rate has gone quite a bit higher. Oh the mysteries of life.

Why did they give you a pacemaker?

It's not as simple as just increasing the resting rate. The important thing is what isn't working right in your heart that the pacer is correcting. Did they mention a diagnosis?
