Hello,

I have been diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy and learned on Wednesday that I need to have an ICD implated. I am waiting for the surgery coord to call me so that I can schedule the procedure. Can anyone tell me if you are put to sleep for the procedure? Also, I'm taking lots of medicines for my condition and I'm wondering will I still have to take the meds with and ICD? Thank you for your reply!

I'm sorta new here myself... I've only receltly discovered this group, and I just wanted to welcome you... I only have a PM, and am not too familiar with other devices and such, or with your condition... But I can tell you that you've found a wonderful place to learn about your condition and your implantable device. You have already gotten responses from 2 very well informed, knowledgable members... can't go wrong there...
I don't have much else to offer but to just say welcome... hope all goes well for you...
come back and visit, and let us know how you are doing...

Hi! I am sure you do have many questions at this point. Everyone is happy to share their experience and knowledge with you here, but you need to have a discussion with your own particular medical care about the ICD and its.purpose/function, the procedure, complications to watch for and recovery instructions. The purpose of medications is to help your heart daily. If you will be pacing, it may take a while to get the settings adjusted to your needs. The ICD is there as a back up for your heart in an emergency, instant help. Please discuss this also with your care. I have my second ICD. My procedures were done under what is referred to often as twilight sleep, which means I do not recall any of the event past preparation, but I awake easily afterwards with less risk for complications. It will take time to adjust to having a device. Try to focus on you have a diagnosis and are receiving the help you need. We are here for you, anytime. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Hopeful Heart

Preparation

I would recommend that you get your hair cut, shave your underarms ( if appropriate !) and dig out clothes and night wear that is easy on / off as you won't be able to raise your arm for 6 weeks. Think about things at home that are too high / too heavy and make arrangements to help you cope.

Feeling stressed

by Acin - 2013-06-21 04:06:14

they just called and changed the procedure date to July 16th. I guess it'sok. I have more time to be prepared even though this is the day after my daughters 12th birthday.....

I'm feeling emotional already....

Welcome Acin

I too have an ICD. It is common to be stressed about surgery but having the date moved up is probably better than a delay. It gives you less time to stress about it.

Learn all you can about your upcoming device. Knowledge is power. If you have any questions ask away.

This is a kind, caring and knowledgeable group. Especially the Walmart Greeter....he's been in that position a long time now :)

Glad you found us!

its delayed

by Acin - 2013-06-21 08:06:03

the date was originally set for June 25. Now its moved to July 16.

Oops!

Sorry Acin, I misread the date, I thought it was in the same month.

In that case, stick with us....we'll get you through the waiting. I do understand, I recently had a hip replacement and had to postpone my surgery date for 2 months because my son injured his knee and needed surgery.

July will be here before you know it.

Welcome aboard!!!

Glad you found us. Right now I am filling in as the official Greeter for the site - just like at Wal-Mart. Would you like a cart?

Good question for the newbie. Usually they just give you enough sedative that you are in the twilight zone. You can be aroused if they want to talk w/ you, but when you awaken just a few minutes after they stop the sedation, you will remember nothing. You become clear -headed quite rapidly. The sedation does nothing but relax you - they use a local anesthetic to kill the pain & that may leave you groggy for a bit when you awaken.

Ask the surgeon what they will use on you for more details as what to expect.

You will have to also ask your EP/surgeon about continuation of all the meds you currently take. It is not unusual that there are some you will need - but only your Dr. knows for sure .

Thank you!

Thank you both for this valuable information! Gosh, I never thought about a seatbelt or bra bothering device..One other thing is it necessary to order a medical braclet?

Very Stressed

by Acin - 2013-06-25 04:06:46

Hi All,

Thanks again for all your comments. I'm at work and it has been a very stressful day! Stress is so not good for my heart. I need a break from everything and everyone. I am trying to send my daughter to Atl to spend a few weeks w/Auntie. I just need time to not do anything. I was severely depressed all weekend. Just scared that something could happen to me before I get the ICD. I'm blessed as I haven't had my heart stop or any weird beats - My EF number is 20%. I'm tired alot but manage to make it into work. The depression is killing me.... I just want this thing over with so that I can move on. I hope everyone is having a good day.

Thanks

They told me that they would call me if there was a cancelation. I'm going to try and get through this day w/out thinking about it! One day at a time, right?

Acin, Talk to your Doctor

Let him know how stressed you feel. Maybe they can move you up for surgery if an opening becomes available or if there is a waiting list.

See what they can do for you.
