ICD's

I have read somewhere and wondered if it was really true that in UK if you die they want your ICD back-surely not?

Most people in the UK are cremated ( after death of course ! ) and PMs / ICDs are removed before cremation as they tend to explode. So if they're being removed anyway it's no big deal for the manufacture to collect them and analyse them.

Interestingly there is now a charity in the UK called Pace4Life which collects pacemakers from mortuaries and undertakers for re-use in third world countries where people are dying because they cannot afford PM implants.

The PMs are sterilised and shipped to India etc and leads are bought separately for the implant patients.

I met the founder of the charity recently and discussed at length with him some of the potential problems of re-using
PMs in poor countries not least of which is the lack of resources for follow-up and settings adjustments but it is a very worthwhile project

..............................I was refused my old PM as a keepsake because my Surgeon explained that if there was still some service life left in the box it could be sold on to Vets treating big fat old dogs..

My understanding is that PMs have Lithium Ion batteries that,..as IAN has pointed out..have a tendency to explode in the crematorium......great if you want to 'go out with a bang',.but a very poor show if the roof falls in on top of the mourners !!

Lithium Ion batteries are the ones that seem to be causing problems with the 380 aeroplane..as in catch fire sometimes.

I am with Jean..as in.." I like it where it is " !!

............I do thank you for pointing out my, now obvious, shortsightedness.

I shall now, in the future, insist that my Surgeon gives every one of the Good Lords Fauna an equal opportunity to benefiet from my clapped-out St Judes....

So..

If anyone out there has a Wheezy Weasel..a Brady Bream,..Fainting Ferret or Gasping Guppie..trust me,.my device will save the day...

I feel a warm glow surrounding me,..knowing that my passing might bring hope to some mangy old pet...

DON !!....do you have a favourite old Brown Bear hanging round your screen door..just waiting to get its hands on your shiny new PM ??

Tattoo Man.....hands off !..I'm not ready..yet.

Why are you only donating your PM to fat old dogs ; what have you got against thin young dogs ?

For that matter, what have you got against cats or goldfish - I'm sure they can all get bradycardia too !

After I am dead I really, really, really don't care what anyone does with my PM. I really don't think the PM cares either. However as long as I"M alive I really like it where it is.

You are always wired and full of energy.

But I think it will make me feel a lot better. My stamina to walk is already better, even right after surgery. They had me walk all around the floor before they would release me. I did so without being exhausted and winded the way I had been.
