Donate Pacemaker ICD

I had a single lead pacemaker/ICD implanted on February 18, 2014. After recent problems I had the single lead pacemaker/ICD removed and a dual lead pacemaker/ICD implanted.

After the procedure the nurse handed me to single lead pacemaker/ICD to keep. I was told that the pacemaker/ICD can not be reused in the USA even though it still has 14 years of battery life left.

I would like to donate the single lead pacemaker/ICD.

Does anyone have any ideas????

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Dear kirkmanmj,
I had my pm implanted in june and have had two more operations because of pacer malfunctioning. I live in El Salvador, Central America. If you wish I can resend your message to my doctor and find out if your pacemaker can be donated and reused in our country. I am so sure you will make feel someone very blessed. Regards. Brenda

Donate to the Philippine General Hospital through UMichigan

Hi. In am from the Philippines and just had a CRT-D implanted in August. Here we pay out-of-pocket for all implanted cardiac devices, so there is a substantial unmet need for pacemakers, etc. especially among the poor. The Philippine General Hospital has a relationship with the University of Michigan for donation of cardiac devices through its My Heart Your Heart Project. You can look up further information on their website, including a inform to request a box for shipping your device to them. Your generous donation would make a huge difference in someone's life in the Philippines. May God bless you!

pacemaker donation

I just added the Univ of Mich information to my advance directive.

I also added that if death is imminent to turn off the pacemaker so that I can die naturally. (the pacemaker only knows to keep doing its job and will continue until someone turns it off)

You know you're wired when...

You fondly named your implanted buddy.

A pacemaker suddenly quitting is no more likely to happen than you are to be struck by lightening.
