listen to your doctor

I am an run maniac exactly 6 weeks after implantation of my (buddy) pacemaker. The doctor told me to wait 8 full weeks before I start vigorous running. During my first 2 week follow up my limit was .5 miles walking slowly. My condition was slow and pausing heart rate resulting in collapse and trips to the ER. With the pacemaker I no longer feel light headed and my heart rate is around 60+. I am 65+ and ran at 6:45 and did 400 repeats at 1:30. Will I return to that Rate with the pacemaker? Looking for some encouragement and insight! Looking for the fountain of youth.

why not?!

Depending why you need it, some don't get back to 100% but most do. Some even end up better than before once their hearts are working properly. Keep in mind it may take a few tries to fine tune the settings on the pacer to your needs. They start with a good guess and adjust from there. It's perfectly normally, if you don't feel right don't hesitate to ask to be seen again. Good luck!

Triathlete with PM

59 yr old triathlete/runner. Had my pacemaker implanted Aug 2015 due to fainting episodes. My heart was pausing too long. Sounds like yours was similar to me. I was running a week later. I was restricted from swimming and lifting my arms above the shoulders to let things heal. 5 weeks post implant I had some mild pericardial effusion issues that resolved itself after high doses of ibuprofen were prescribed for a week. Between some running injuries and that, it took me several months to get back in full swing. I am now in training for a full Ironman which I postponed from last year. Very seldom even think about my PM anymore. Like nothing ever happened.

Triathlete/runner back to pre-pacemaker speeds

AJ - have you gotten back to your pre-pacemaker speeds?  I had mine implanted in January, and I am completely back to my running fitness level (sounds like we run around the same speed).  It didn't take long to get back into shape - just stay consistent.  Hope you're doing well.

I am running 2 miles slow but unable to complete a 3 mile long run without walking. I am far from my former fitness level with no help in sight.

My pacemaker was installed in 1998 and I have not felt better. The mental part is the toughest.
