My pacemaker was fitted a few months ago. I notice that when I now go on the treadmill my pulse rate shoots up very rapidly to over 120 whereas previously it took quite a few minutes before reaching this rate. Is this a normal effect of a pacemaker

Not necessarily

The important thing is how do you feel on the treadmill ? Forget the numbers; do you feel better or worse than you did before ? If you feel worse you may need RR adjusting , if you don't, then the setting may be right.
I would expect my HR to reach 120 quite quickly on a treadmill. This does of course depend on whether you run or walk on it.

how does it feel

Do you feel energized or short of breath when it happens? My newer one has a different rate response than my last one so my rate goes up faster now. I love it! My stamina is a lot better. However, it also means I get short of breath going up the stairs or occasionally just walking across the room. Then it's annoying, but I for now at least I'm not asking them to adjust it because it's helpful when working out. It's not uncommon to take a few tries to get it fine tuned. If you don't feel right, go back.

One week has passed and I must admit that each day I feel a little stronger.

your settings (specifically Rate Response) need adjusting.
