Aquacise

Hi

I was fitted with a dual lead Biotronik pacemaker in January 2016 for total heart block. The scar has finally healed so I decided it was safe to go in the pool. I went to an aquafit class which is basically aerobics in the water. The instructor said I should check with a physician as it could damage the pacemaker. Has anyone else had this issue?

Thanks for your feedback.

it shouldn't be a problem!

So long as the skin is healed you're fine. It's only like being active out of water, you just need to be aware of your own limitations.

I do regular swimming, rock climbing, cardio and weight workouts at the gym and never experieced any problems except very sore limbs!

It's good that the instructor is cautious, but as long as you are cleared for exercise this is one of the safer ones we can do. Everyone agrees we shouldn't play full contact sports, some say we shouldn't lift heavy weights (my doctor is not one of them, so I do), anything else is ok. If something doesn't feel right, back off.

You might find the scar tissue feels sore after the first few times. That's normal if you haven't been moving much since Jan. Ice as needed if that happens.

Water aerobics

I do water aerobics and never had a problem. In the winter I wear anaots aqua vest as it gets cold when leaving the water. Sometimes that brings flashbacks to wearing a zoll vest for months...I'll take a pacemaker anyday.
