recovery

I received my pacemaker April 13 2016. I was stopped from running in December 2015 and did not resume until june 2016. I loss all fitness and was very discouraged wnen i could not run to my pre-pacemaker days. If you are a runner new to the pacemaker life I have good news for you. Please be patient and fitness will come back. My long run is 8 miles going to nine this weekend and my every other day run is 6 miles. In a recent Veterans Day 5k I was the age group winner 65-69. i hope this encourages someone to not quit in the pit but keep running it will come sooner than you think.

Good to hear things are going well for you. 8 miles is a good distance at any age, with or without a pacemaker!!

Prior to having the CRT-D implanted I used to jog 2-3 times a week, 5K, 10K, 5K. If I’m honest about it, it kept me sane. I sort of held the view that if I could exercise at that level I was OK. I had a couple of MI’s in quite quick succession at the end of 2012 & 2013. At that point I was advised to ease up on the gym until I’d had a boat load of tests done, the outcome of which was having the device fitted March this year. Since then I’ve been trying to get some fitness back but it’s been slowing going.

One of the main things that bugs me, is than when I do try to jog  within 3-4 minutes I become sore beneath my collar bone where the leads dive into the vein. Also the motion involved in jogging sets the device bouncing around, even after walking any real distance, the area can become sore. How did you get past that to a level where you could run?  It did cross my mind to strap it in place with some surgical dressing tape…

My pacemaker area often gets a little discomfort but nothing terrible and goes away quickly.  I will be 2 years in May and it keeps getting better (less irritation).

I have heard that sometimes a pacemaker needs to be repositioned in a new pocket, don't know if it is true but would be worth asking your doctor about the problems you are having.

Good Luck
