Protein powder?

Hey guys!

Would really appreciate some advice on this. I am hoping to do some weight training after my recuperating period. Do you guys think that I, a 17 year old, can take protein powder? And are there any side effects?

Thanks!

hello Bory

I got my first pacemaker last year when I was 17 and since then have taken protein powder with no side affects. Granted I never took them long term or got any noticeable results from them but I don't see any reason why protein should alter the way your pm works unless your doctor says otherwise.

hope this helps!

Should not be a problem

Dont think protien powder would do any side effects. you are normal and can do the normal activities. but still just be careful at times. i got my first pm at the age of 14. i am 24 now and recently got a 2nd one. stay cool and active.

Cheers!!

Protein powder will not affect the pacer directly, few foods will. Eating well and taking care of ourselves is the very best thing we can do for our hearts, keep the muscle strong and the arteries clear since our eletrical system is already impaired.

I use protein powder occasionally when I can't get a good meal with protein right after a hard workout. I try to eat within 20-30 min after because the body needs replenished. JMHO, but I think meat or eggs with fruit or veggies is a better way to get the nutrients and protein powders should not be considered a meal replacement, but protein powder has its place. It's also good for weight gain, but I'm not a teenager anymore and the days of trying to gain weight are loooooooong gone. Have a chat with your GP if that's your intent, to gain weight.

One thing I would avoid as an athlete with a cardiac history is supplements that have caffeine and other things to affect blood flow like niacin. These are mostly in pre-workout drinks. We aren't technically supposed to avoid them, but I don't like to take anything that will mess with my heart when I'm going to be pushing hard.

Thank you!

Thank you all for your valuable comments :) My friend has told me that preworkout drinks contain different elements from protein powders, which could potentially mess with the heart. I will take the powders in moderation!

My eight year old son had a pacemaker since he was 6 months old. He does very well, plays soccer, baseball, and rides his bike. I am so glad he is not ashamed of his pacemaker. He will proudly show his "battery" to anyone.
