Exercise Issues

I use to be able to walk 3 miles prior to my pacemaker implant. Now I couldn't walk a half mile or I will get shocked to death.I am referring to the built in defibrillator. Has anyone else experienced this draw back?

Don't panic...

I had this when my ICD was newly fitted. Talk to your doctor, they will be able to tailor the settings for you.

Good luck!

Need Adjustments

Agree with Random, you need to talk to your doctor.  The ICD can be programmed to provide therapy at almost any rate.  You need to find the rate that is right for you.

After my implantation I was taking daily 2 mile walks.  My heart rate (HR) would reach a certain level and I would get ill (had to stop, usually throw up, then could continue).  I used a FitBit to monitor my HR and found out where it was when I would get sick.  I talked to my doctor about it and he had me do a stress test just to make sure.  After the test he adjusted my settings with regard to when it would attempt to pace me out of any V-Tach situations and when it would provide a shock.  Fortunately, after a little more then two years, I have not experienced a shock (knock on wood).

I have just ungone a hip replacement which severely limited my walking for around 6 months, so I am having to start all over again.  I started off walking 1/2 mile and taking a break if my HR gets to high.  It will probably take me a few months to get back where I was, but I will keep working at it.

Good luck and hope you find the answer for you.
