Thanks for telling me about your experience with home monitoring. At this stage I'm thinking that I like the idea of being able to speak with the my Dr and the techs looking at the data in real time, just to get a feel for how things are going and to learn more about how adjustments can be made in respone to my symptoms and the downloaded data. But I can see how home monitoring would be useful when travelling (the Medtronic reader is battery operated, not plugged in) and also in order to capture any concerning symptoms as they happen. I go for my first follow-up appointment next week so will discuss this with them.

Hello,
I had my pacemaker put in October 12th and went out of state for a week the first of December and I didn't take mine. My device rep told me mine holds 14 days worth of information so it would be fine. Mine is a Bostic Scientific so I know they are all different. Just wanted to add in here to show that things are usually fine to not take them.

I have the Medtronic wireless monitoring device and send in a report quarterly. I do not travel with the device unless the scheduled date occurs during a trip.
My thought is that if I have a problem I will call 911 and get help. The monitor cannot get me any help. 911 can.
At 6 mths post op I went on a 7 week trip to Europe and did not bring the monitor. Did bring a multi-language card explaining that I have a pm but did not need it. The regular ID card allowed me to bypass security xray. Everyone was helpful.

As for my pacemaker (almost 7 years old) I like to think of it in the terms of the old Timex commercial - takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

I don't take mine when I travel, most don't. Unless you need very close monitoring, there's no need. Mine only sends a full report every 3 months and I have the dates for the next 3 years. If I'm going to be away on a download day, I ask them to reschedule it.
