Upper body weight training

Hi there, 

i was wondering I'm 6 weeks post implant and wanting to get back in the gym. I love lifting weights nothing heavy but around 10lbs on each arm. I wondered if there was any arm/chest excercises I should avoid due to the pacemaker. I've heard you shouldn't really do 'flys' can anyone out there help? Please don't say to ask my doctor, I like in the UK and had my operation done on the NHS and advice/help is very vague/minimal. Thank you so much

For that weight, there probably isn't any move that you can't do. Some more conservative doctors tell patients to avoid going heavy overhead, to not do push ups and pull ups. I do all of that, with my doctor's permission.

Sometimes we'll aggravate the scar tissue when getting back to exercise. It doesn't do any damage, but it might get achy. You'll be able to tell when something doesn't feel right. Back off and try it again in a week. Ice will help if that happens.

I have an ICD and have gone back to the gym.  I am doing flys, but, like you, using small weights.  I generally do around 20 reps with 5 pounds at a very slow, some times pausing half way, rate.  For the first few days it made the area of the implant site sore, probably because I was working the muscle directly under it.  After a week or ten days it doesn't hurt anymore.

I haven't had an issue with my strength training and only avoid those movements that require the barbell to rest near the top the chest (i.e. front squats, etc.) or extreme movements.  I stick with the basics.

I am 4 months post op and have returned to my complete weight programme. I am trying to build more muscle in area of chest where pm is implanted. I do flys, and other shoulder,chest toning reps.

I do pushups and weight assisted pull ups.  No problems.  My doc said no limitations.  I do not have any health issues (other than total block) and take no meds at 65 yrs
