Hi,
My friend has recently joined up to a ‘Rugby Club’ where you play Rugby matches and learn skills etc. She says that I should join and I really like the sound of it, actually! I’ve tried other sports that are similar to Rugby such as Gaelic Football but I never really got the hang of it! Let’s just say, I am not really the sporty type! 😬However, the only thing is my doc says I shouldn’t play contact sports because of my pm. I’m guessing Rugby is a contact sport, right??? So, I was just wondering if anyone had any tips or past experiences with Rugby or similar.
Thanks

Rugby Union ( & League) is a great sport if you are fit and don't mind a bit of 'rough and tumble'. I only stopped playing rugby because I was lacking in body weight. I remember being dragged along the ground holding onto the leg of my opposition ( with both of my arms) whilst he was still running! I came to the conclusion that more wieght was needed on the 'ball and chain'.!!
Prior to my last AF ablation I had to tell my electrocardiologist that my tachycardia of 120 bpm was due to watching the Wales v. Australia Rugby Union game!
You should get a pacemaker protector if you are going to play a contact sport.

You won't know what you are missing until you play.

One more thing...

I know nothing about rugby and I have no opinion about whether you could or should play. However, there's one thing none of the replies told spelled out that you might want to consider:
If you take a hit directly on the pacemaker it will HURT. BAD. Pacemakers are tough and a hit won't damage yours, but your pain will be severe. That's why Selwyn is recommending a pacemaker protector.

I love this new part of me, and very, very thankful that this technology exists and I know that it's all only going to get better over time.

Rugby is a contact sport that should be avoided!
