Leads and waterskiiing

Had second ICD put in May 29th.  Checkup last week looked good.  Have a new EPI, but that's for another post.  Anyway, went on our boat yesterday and was trying to teach my son how to waterski.  I wanted to get in the water myself and show him but I hesitated because I was worried if I let go of skis once I got up and slammed into the water that I would dislodge my leads.   I am still a little sore around the site, but that's not a big issue.  Any advice?

Thanks to all

As Robin said, you aren't going to dislodge a lead at this point. However, if it's still tender it's probably best not to water ski just yet. You won't damage anything, but if it's already sore it probably won't feel too good after. I have a pacemaker which is smaller than an icd but it's in the muscle. It took me about 4 months after my last replacement before I was doing everything I did before without any soreness.

Are you icing for soreness?

Thanks for your info.  I guess I just wanted to show my 30-year-old son that a 62-year-old mother could do it all:))   In a couple of months I might just try, though.   I am not sore enough to the point I need to ice.  Just a nagging itch over the site and sensitive to touch.  I was concerned about the leads, though, because before I had replacement ICD put in, my EPI said I had to have a replacement lead put in because one of my leads was giving "feedback."  But they were able to put replacement lead in the same vein. I just know there won't be any more room for another lead if the new one fails, and I DON'T want to go through with surgery unless I have to.  Maybe I'll just stick to riding my motorcycle.  I feel safer on my bike than on skiis:)  So glad I have this site to get help from.   Thanks so much!!!

Water skiing

I have an ICD and at my one year checkup I asked about doing chin-ups at the gym and weight lifting limits.  My ICD is implanted in a pocket below the clavicle, not below the muscle so it is on the surface. My EP does not want me to do full body weight chin-ups.  Weight lifting is OK as long as I don't use weights that are real heavy.

I asked also about rowing a traditional long rowboat and my EP said no because of the pressure on my chest muscle.

I forgot to ask about water skiing.  I do water ski (I sure try hard!) and need to pose that question since some of the cautions my EP gave me can affect chest muscles and strains in a similar manner.

Recommend asking your EP based upon your unique situation.

After leaping over a tall building in a single bound.  I tried to stop a Jeep Cherokee  doing 35 mph with my right shoulder.  (I wasn't ready for a speeding locomotive yet, so I started small.)   Jeep hood ornament dead-centered on the door post behind me, shoved it into my shoulder & chest wall.  Broke collarbone, 8 ribs, collapsed right lower lobe of lung, lacerated liver & bruised kidney.  Possible broken neck & brain concussion.  Head went through passenger window. ( I was wearing a skateboarder's helmet, so took out that window like Garfield the Cat's loyal sidekick, Oddie the dog, w/o injury.)  Hauled me to the hosp strapped to a backboard, moanin' & groanin' all the way (plus a few expletives that even Richard Nixion didn't know!)  The trauma center they took me to did NOT even interrogate my PM or check it in any way, despite me wearing a necklace w/ a dog tag stating I had the PM..  Got out 12 days later & hustled to my Cardio.  He was more than a bit annoyed at the hosp.  Had my chest Xrayed, did an echcocardiogram and determined that A)  I now had a minor aortic aneurysm from the impact that stressed all my major vessels attached to my heart,  B)  My 6 wk old lead was still FIRMLY embedded.  So he whips out his cell phone & calls his EP buddy who did the job and asks (So help me, Hannah, this is the truth & may lightning strike me dumb if it isn't) "Steve, what the ^%$# did you put that lead in with? Concrete?"  That was in May, 2007 & that lead is still in there, functioning normally.I do not fear for your lead, but at 62, I'd wait a few more weeks to get all your strength & agility back,  lest you catch the tip of a ski on a wave, trip & go buns over teakettle, do a faceplant on the tip of a ski & knock ot all your front teeth.  You'd be sucking tomato soup through a straw for a month of Sundays for that and be thaying "Thither Thuthy ith thitting on a Thithle" till you got your new teeth.

New PM lead was but 6 weeks old.
