baby monitors

Weirdest thing- so when I am next to our baby monitor (it is a cheap walkie talkie type thing) it cuts out but when my hubby is next to it, it works fine! 

Anyone experienced this with monitors? I stay 6 inches away from it but I do have to be close to it so I can hear baby if she starts tossing and turning :-)

Some PMs are RF transmitters

Some PMs have Bluetooth capabilities and this might overwhelm the front end receiver of a cheap wireless baby monitor, others have a fairly powerful transmitter that wakes up every so often to talk to a remote monitor (e.g. BostonSci Accolade), and this can interfere with poorly made kit (uses one or another slice of the unregulated radio spectrum, which is pretty much a free-for-all).  So it doesn't entirely surprise me that a wireless baby monitor might blank under these conditions.

Our youngsters predated my PM by a *long* time so I've not personally experienced this.

But I think Crusty is right on here.  OTOH BT chipsets are so ubiquitous now that it's hard to believe even a cheap walkie talkie could screw things up that badly.  The PM also shouldn't be just transmitting willy-nilly. That would take a lot of energy, over the years.  I'd think it would wait for a signal from the base station to turn on the transmitter.  That said, every once in a while I'll see what looks like my PM come up as a Bluetooth device on my laptop.

As surprising as this is, it's the only thing that does make sense.  When there is only one reasonable answer, that's probably the correct one.  ;-)
