Not Quite Right

On June 11, 2007 I had my PM implanted. Since then there have been several times when I have went to get up after a few steps felt odd. It's hard to describe. I feel kind of light headed or in a fog all of a sudden, like maybe getting ready to pass out. I know things like this happen as we age but this has happened a lot more since I got my PM.

I had bypass surgery on February 7, 2007. All my doctors tell me there is nothing mechanically wrong with my heart and I've never had a heart attack. We caught the blockages in time. I called my EP doctors nurse and they've moved my next PM clinic visit up to August 14. But they aren't sure if there is something in my PM that needs turned on or if it's something I'll have to learn to live with.

Your thoughts and opinions are appreciated.

Light headed

Rick,

I felt very dizzy and light headed after my PM and it got better with time. I had mine for about 9 months and was still getting that feeling too often. My EP didn't find any reason related to my PM or heart. I went in for a check up with my PCP and she found that I was anemic. Once I got a prescription for an iron supplement I felt much better. I know I am so quick to think everything is related to my PM and forget about the rest of my body. If your PM is fine get a check up from your PCP and make sure nothing else is going on.

I know I also tried to do too much too soon after my PM. Make sure you are getting rest because I believe this is a big adjustment for a body to make and it takes time. Take care of yourself!

ask about adjustments

I had my pacer for about 7 to 8 months and was going through some of the same things you are. Then I blacked-out for 10 minutes. I went back to my electrophysiologist and described how I had been feeling. He turned on the rate drop response and set my heart rate up from 50bpm to 70bpm. That was over a year ago. I have gotten continually better ever since. I have now reached a point where I hardly even think about having the pacemaker. So ask the Dr. or tech. what settings do I have and could they be changed to help the symptoms. Bowlrbob

A properly implanted and adjusted pacemaker will not even be noticeable after you get over the surgery.
