I don't have a Watchman, rather an Atri-Clip installed during a CABG. The idea is the same. Neither is a guarantee that you'll be able to get off anticoagulants. I'm still a lifer.
The reason anticoagulants are required for six months is the same reason they're required after stenting. The body will try to reject any foreign object it detects.if it can't get rid of it will isolate it (endothelialize). Until this happens clots can form on the device and be thrown to the brain.
After the six months, a TEE is performed to make sure the LAA is closed sufficiently.

I have a watchman and after a very uncomfortable post procedure adjustment period I am now doing fine. There are different protocols for the time required to stay on the anticoagulants I was on them for 3 months. Very happy to be off them now.

you asked the same question in 2017. Are you still thinking about it.? You might go on the Watchman site as they now have a forum for your questions. As not many on this site have the watchman.
What i did not like is you have to be on blood thinners for about 6 more months after the watchman is installed. Which does not make any sense. As the reason to get one is because one cannot tolerate them.
