Scar treatment

Since I have had 3 pacemaker operations since January 2020-

I now have a new third scar along with 2 smaller scars. Previously I used Bio oil. A friend recommended Dermatix silicone gel for scars. I wonder if anyone else has used this or something more effective than Bio oil?

Sun protection

I have no comment on the products that you reference. Aside  from generally keeping the area of the scar moisturized with whatever product you like and avoiding harsh soaps/ detergents, I believe protecting the scars from sun exposure is a key factor.

Lotions and Potions

Hi Aberdeen

Sounds like you have been through a lot over the last couple of years! I have used rosehip oil and vitamin E cream on my scar which seemed to soften it.  Unfortunately, it didn't make it make it magically disappear, I think it depends on your skin type.  I have also heard that silicone sheets are good but haven't tried them so let us know how it goes if you do.  Hope your healing and recovery goes well.

The natural history of scars is that they take about 6 months to fade from the red, and up to two years to fully contract. They are made up of connective tissue collagen.

The silicone sheets can be useful to flatten scars if the connective tissue is starting to become higher than the skin.

I certainly would not apply anything until the scar has fully formed as this may weaken the wound or introduce infection.

There are various other things that can be tried, some of them quite toxic!

Scar treatment

Nothing to do with my PM but I've recently had a couple of surgeries on my arm (one a month ago).  My OT has strongly recommended Vitamin E oil. Minimizing PM scaring is primarily cosmetic, where wrist/hand scaring can restrict the mobility of the joint. The OT is having me use the Vitamin-E oil and massage of the area to try to break up the scar.

you might find a licensed Acpuncturist to help with the healing.

new to pace - I wondered where the acupuncturist would put the needles? My husband had a shoulder injury and unfortunately he couldn't put up with the needles. I wonder if I would be braver!

these are tiny pricks into the skin. then they are in for me at least 20 minutes laying on my back.  She also has used a little pulsing electodes.  She has put in near my right  shoulder replacement and for the implanted pacemaker on the left side for the scars.  But there are other locations on the body that are also for same location.

Dermatix

by Camelgirl - 2022-05-29 02:00:57

Hi Aberdeen,

I know exactly how you are feeling regarding your scar, last year I had five procedures at the same site as my pacemaker due to infection which resulted in my pacemaker been completely removed and the leads too. My scar area is now huge spreading under my arm and so ugly. The healing was a difficult process but in the last month my derm gave me Dermatix gel to apply and it is excellent, luckily my insurance covers the cost . I have started using it on my other pacemaker scar too which was implanted in January.

So give it a try, I am very happy with it

good luck

Thank you Camelgirl - I will try Dermatix. Sorry to hear that you have had 5 procedures on the same site. I thought I had many operations but you certainly have had a tough time. Hopefully we won't have any more for some time!

Bio oil for me!

by LondonAndy - 2022-05-29 07:44:45

I used Bio oil on my scar, to great effect. The technician at my last check-up commented on how it was hardly visible, and she said the best results she had seen have been from the use of either Bio oil or vitamin E.
