CT Scans
by Marybird - 2022-07-18 08:20:01
I just had some CT scans of my chest and abdomen, both with and without contrast.. No effect at all on my pacemaker, either from the contrast media ( both ingested and IV), or from the CT scanner.
dye

Completly unrelated to the pacemaker, but I am allergic to the dye (iodine). Rash and crazy itching. It must be common because they had a big jar of benedryl and gave me some immediately. Last time they needed to do contrast, they loaded me up on what must have been massive amounts of benedryl because I slept through the test and most of the day, but no allergic reaction.
You know you're wired when...
You prefer rechargeable batteries.

Hubby and I have both had CT Scans with contrast

Athena, yes I have had several recent CT Scans with contrast with no problems whatsoever. They inject the contrast into a vein in your arm. You may feel a little warm or experience a hot flush and possibly the desire to pee but it passes quickly and then the scan takes place. Often the scan is over in minutes. They use iodinated contrast which is usually out of your system in 24 hours especially if you have normal kidney function and drink plenty of water afterwards.
If you have kidney problems the radiographer may require checks on your most recent blood test results to make sure that the correct amount of contrast is used and that your contrast can be effectively eliminated afterwards.
My husband had a CT Scan with contrast once and had a few problems afterwards with the iodinated contrast causing a thyroid storm (he has hyperthyroidism) but this was because he has poor kidney function and was dehydrated at the time of his scan. His symptoms were managed with intravenous fluids and he made a full recovery and went on to have many more uneventful CT Scans with contrast, so please don't worry.
They use contrast to enhance CT images. I wish you lots of luck and hope your doctors get the information they need
