AV ablation

Can someone please explain what happens when my pacemaker battery needs changing after an AV node ablation procedure. How do they keep my heart going?

Device change at end of battery life

Di as you can imagine, our pacemakers are not left to run out of battery before the device is replaced.  When the battery is losing power they will keep a closer eye on you and replace your battery well before the battery expires.  This can be any time in the last 6 months of battery life.

Replacement is super easy so members tell me.  The wound is opened, the old device is disconnected from the leads which stay in place. The new device is attached to the leads, tested and then our wound is closed.  But you can read all about this in the attached link which you need to copy and paste into your main browser to open it..  Most members go home the same day.

If your heart is dependent on your pacemaker to make it beat, you will be attached to an external pacing machine while the generator is changed if that is what you fear.  How are you managing after your AV Node ablation?

Di, yes they usually like to test the pacemaker before an AV node ablation and to allow you to get used to pacing before you become pacemaker dependent.  I hope the ablation goes well for you and helps you to have fewer symptoms and a better quality of life.  Do you have Atrial Fibrillation or another arrhythmia?

I was offered an AV Node ablation some years ago, and this may still be in my future but for the moment I am managing well with a beta blocker and my pacemaker.

If there is anything you want to know, please ask and we will try to help you. Good luck for 17th November

AV ablation

My cardiologist just talked about this at my last appointment.  I showed him the recall notice on my pacemaker (with instructions for dependent patients).  He'd already seen it (I think he got notified automatically) and talked about it.  They temporarily clip another pacemaker to the leads and swap the leads to the new generator and unhok the temporary pacemaker.  It's not a big deal. These guys are paid (well) to know how to do these things. 🥴

My pacemaker implant and AV ablation were done (litterally) simultaneously. One EP at each end of me.

You know you're wired when...

You know the difference between hardware and software.

Sometimes a device must be tuned a few times before it is right. My cardiologist said it is like fine tuning a car.
