bathroom weight scales

Hi everyone, just got my pacemaker and still learning a LOT of the ins and outs...

I need a new bathroom weight scale:

- Are digital scales just as safe as analog scales?

- Which is your favorite brand/model scale?  I just want ACCURATE weight!

Thank you in advance for your help and I look forward to learning from all of you!

There is no problem. digital or analog.  BUT the BMI calculating scales are not recommended. These scales pass a small current through the body that may upset pacemakers.

As far as accuracy goes, good luck.  Outside the balance beam type scales, I think you've got some windmills ahead of you.  I have two in my bathroom because neither can be trusted.  Not only do they disagree (not accurate) but they're not even monotonic (increasing weight may, or may not, show a higher reading).

You probably don't need accuracy anyway.  Consistency is probably enough.

Bathroom scales and their usefulness...

I used to have a colleague who weighed himself every day.  I tried to get him to put his scales into the loft to stop this: it's the path of madness.

The harsh truth is that unless you are willing to purchase scales capable of meeting your local weights and measures standards for commercial usage, their accuracy and precision will be a bad joke.  They may show 150lb, but you can have little confidence that they really are correct - accuracy is not great for domestic scales.  Secondly their precision is likely to be poor: would they be able to reliably detect a 1 pound difference in weight between one day and the next?  Almost certainly not.  And if they can, are you sure that this isn't just a change in a) bladder content, b) bowel content, c) state of your hydration?

If you *really* care about body mass, you need to take the measurement at the same time every day, after emptying bowels and bladder and then log the value on a graph so that you can detect a trend.  This is the path to obsession/madness.

But nothing I say will stop you doing what you want to.  Life is all about choices.

One thing measuring your weight every day does is to  make sure you're not retaining water.  The scale doesn't have to be accurate for this, only repeatable.  I don't know how much water is dangerous (ask your doctors).  Mine told me to watch out for five to eight pounds in a few days.  It's never happened but I watch for it.  I can see two, maybe four, pounds difference over a few days. Remember, a pint is a pound.  A pint isn't a lot so will dissappear in the body but it still matters.

As some here have pointed out, scales differ from one another. In my doctor's ofice I weight 72 kg, at my mom's 70kg, and in the one I have in my house I weight 75kg.

So, I would just use any scale that is relatively well made.
