Arm movement questions

Most of the literature warns about lifting and moving your arm above your head on the side where the PM is implanted. Does anyone know of any restrictions for lifting (like a 15 lb suitcase) using the arm on the side where the PM was not implanted? It has been about 12 days since I had the operation.

Thanks

Lifting after pm implant

Yes. Similar advice. The restriction on arm movement for about 6 weeks applies to lifting objects greater than 10 lbs as well.

I think it depends

My EP doctor told me to watch it for only 3 weeks and like most was given the 10 lb. weight limit. Personally, I think it depends on the patient and the doctors say 10 lbs. to make sure they're covered. Some of us can lift more than others to begin with. I'm 6'6" and they give me the same limitations as they would my wife who is only 5'2".

My weight limit was 5 pounds. My doctor must think I'm a wimp.

Lifting

You should probably just ask your surgeon if it's ok. I know after I had my ICD implanted they told me not to lift more than about 10 lbs for 6 weeks or so.

follow dr's orders

just follow the orders. i did and had absolutely no problems. it is a time for healing so you must listen as you don't want a problem. it is traumatic enough as it is but not that traumatic that you can't deal with it and get on with things. why set yourself up for complications. some people enjoy the attention tho of always being sick lol lol jessie

Hi- I just had mine put in about 3 weeks ago- so Happy Anniversary to you! I was allowed to lift 5 pounds after 2 weeks and now can do up to 20- however he strongly recommended that I do only about 5 for 6 weeks. Doctor said that if I needed to that bad I can do up to 20 once in awhile. I would stick to a low limit if I were you just to be sure! We don't want to do this again- that is for sure! Good luck:)

Here is what the doc told me

The surgeon said not to worry and it was okay to lift the suitcase with my right arm ( PM is on the left side). I have faith that he knows what he is saying.

Thanks for your comments.

opposite side lifting?

by meema - 2007-10-03 12:10:00

Doctors just say 5 pound limit and I assumed that meant the left arm on the side where the implant it. Would lifting on the opposite side affect the PM or the leads?
