Phantom shock
I had read online somewhere about the phantom shock. It seems after you have received a shock, your brain may record this. In a dreamlike state you can relive it. It happened to me the other night. I'm sure it was a dream, because if your ICD ever fires,it isnt something you have to wonder about. It sure did disturb a good nights sleep. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this and how often.

The brain, along with your nervous system records stimulus even if the body's functioning is shutting down, as long as the brain is not dead, it remembers. If there is any form of electrical current passing through your neurons and that information gets to the brain, your brain will remember the experience even if you don't consciously remember. Think about the shocks given by defibrillator paddles and your memory/experience will make more sense. This neural memory is what lays the foundation for phantom shocks or as I referred to them as dark dreams.
Shortly after I returned home from the hospital after being resuscitated from sudden cardiac death, I woke in the middle of the night, screaming. my back arched off the bed. This happened several times. Three years later I am still unable to sleep at night if I do not take anti anxiety medication before sleeping. Sometimes I even need a sleep aid. What I experience is a pretty severe response to my ordeal and was compounded by other problems associated with my ICD. Everyone is different in how they mentally process their unique experience.
You not imagining things. Your mind is trying to make sense of what it experienced. Seek counseling if you find your memories become problematic. Good luck.

Thanks for the responses. They do test it while you are under and thats where your's came from. Please dont be afraid of it firing. You will most likely be very sick and wont care or realize it going off. It also happens really fast. I am glad to know what it feels like. MIne had fired 2 times and I would not be alive without it. I hope yours never has to fire, but,be thankful you have your "sparky"
take care

Boy are you right my icd went off every day until i was able to meet the rep so i know what it feels like at times i have felt somethine in a nap (sleep) and thought it went and i have felt a jump in my left arm it was like a low voltage zap so i don't know so i would call it a phantom zap.
