Moved to a state that may have power outages. I had my PM installed over two years ago, and to used my generator once; but now my wife is concerned that the generator will interfere with the PM. It is a bit small (5000), and I informed her that it would be alright for me to start and run that thing. I have done some research and cannot find anything that indicates the generator would interfere with my PM. Has anyone out there been exposed to an electrical generator?

Hi,
We have a gas generator and I was told not to use it. Ours is also a 5,000 with a pull just like a mower. We were often without power when we lived on the dunes. We will go over to an electric starter and then I think all I have to do is plug it in and turn it on and I would be just fine - not going to hang by it either for fear of a problem. That is one of the projects this summer.
Good luck, Patty
I have a lot of experience with them

I have a 1000 watt Honda that I use to power my small trailer when camping. I also helped a number of other campers with various sized. Heck I pick up mine when it's running and need to move it. The docs who tell us not to use such things have no idea what they are talking about.
The best source of info is the pacemaker manufacturers support line. Just don't tell them that the doc has instructed you not to use the generator. Their pecking order makes them back up the doc even if wrong.

Dan, I have a 5500 watt generator that I use on occasional power outage. Have had absolutely no problems using it. I would say if your going to hug it, it may be a problem. But as far as just starting it and plugging in cords and walking away you will have no issues. Hell it isnt any different than sitting on a riding lawn mower for two hours of which I do every week.
Not a problem

The EM field created by the generator follows an inverse square law. Double the distance from the gen and the gen's EM field drops by 1/4. I see no problem if you are a few feet away. Just start the unit and walk away.

A pacemaker completely solved my problem. In fact, it was implanted just 7 weeks ago and I ran a race today, placed first in my age group.

If you were to lay down on the generator while it is running you may notice an irregular heart beat while you were on the gen. But starting one, plugging the cords and doing any other thing you might need to will not interfere with your pacemaker.
Now to make it simple keep your pacemaker 6 inches away from the gen and you are safe.
