I got my first CRT-ICD in 2007, replaced in 2010, and now my batteries are runned down again. Problem is, I have lost 70 pounds in the last 11 months and the ICD is no longer in the pocket but above my left breast.
The electrophysiologist says he can’t do this and has referred me to a heart surgeon for a submuscular ICD. Has anyone had this done, and what can I expect? I am 70 years old, have left ventriclular failure, and a widow of 8 months.

Submuscular ICD

Hello Maggie,
I can identify with your problem. I have had my dual pacemaker ICD for 1 1/2 years now. When it was first implanted, after about 6 months I began to experience severe pain and felt it moving toward my breast. I didn't say anything about it because everyone I talked to a lot of people that had one they said they did not experience any pain. I finally mentioned it to my cardiologist on a visit and discovered that it had moved all the way to my underarm. My electrophysiologist took one look and said this has to be reseated. He did so without hesitation and placed it submuscular and I can say that it was such a relief. It only took about 1 hour in surgery. I still have pain from the ICD and leads but have learned to live with it. I hope you doctor will help you, I know a lot of them don't like to do it but I have a Cardio that is very sympathetic to my condition. Wishing you success in geting this taken care of.

My name is Pookie and I want to welcome you to this club:)
I only have a pacemaker (since 2004) so I don't know anything about your device but I'm guessing (and hoping) that some of our other members will pop in and explain to you what they have gone through when they have had a submuscular implant.
From what I've read over the years on this site, the recovery period is longer but those who have had it done say in the long run they are very pleased with the placement. In the meantime, you could use the "search" feature which is up in the upper right hand corner of this screen and type in "submuscular" and you should find oodles of past posts & comments on this subject.
And I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I just lost my father on September 6th.
Wishing you all the best and continue to pop back on the site from time to time as I'm sure someone will respond with the information you are looking for.
Take care,
Pookie
