Battery life

Depends on a lot of things. With an ICD any shocks delivered will put a lot more drain on the batteries. Maybe someone else here who has an ICD can tell what the original estimated life is.

The whole unit is replaced since the battery is sealed inside. The leads to the heart are reused. The surgery is much shorter since they don't have to spend time getting the leads positioned like with the original. Its usually an outpatient procedure. Also, there is no restriction on arm movements like with the original. The only limitation after replacement is to give the incision a few days to heal.

Hi, I've had mine replaced 3 times and replacements are easy. Battery life depends on how much of your battery your heart uses. Don't fret about another one just yet. Keep checking in and doing your routine battery checks. Relax and enjoy life.

Frank hit the nail on the head. My original was Dec 2003 and was replaced in Jan 09.

probably 6, maybe 7, could be 8 yrs

My 2006 BS model with 8 shocks went 5 years. Shocks do shorten battery life. Supposedly the newer ICD's can go a little longer. Replacement is almost "minor." I was 'upgraded' to a bi Ven CRT 3 lead so I had to spend a night in the hospital. Otherwise I would have been home that day. In 6 or so years with better anesthesia, cleaner environment, better catheters, should be a real "walk in the park" then.
