Ashtanga yoga and pacemaker

Hi all
I am a new member, a yoga teacher and i need some feedback. I do not have a pace maker but i have a new student that is joining our Ashtanga yoga classes. Ashtanga yoga is a dynamic and strong cardio type of yoga, and yes the benefits out of it are countless, but i would like to ensure the safety of my student. Anyone who can give me a feedback about cardio exercise and pacemakers, i will appreciate it immensely. Is it safe to practice cardio activity with a pace maker?
Thank you
Stamena

depends on why they need the pm

Having a pm will not prevent us from doing any type of cardio we want to do, but sometimes the underlying reason why we have the pm will leave us with restrictions. Any cardiac patient should be cleared by their doctor before exercising.

Thank you very much Tracey and Cabg!
Yes, i am more comfortable now and know what direction to take with my new student. Also, what questions to ask her to ensure her safety.
I am sure she is out of recovery as she is working currently and leading (by the sound of what she tells me) normal life. Nonetheless, i prefer not to leave anything to guestimates and chance.
All the best, and thank you again

This is a question I've been wondering as well, considering I'm a little over 2 weeks post surgery and dying to get back into my yoga routine! It's good to know that others out there are getting back in to it after receiving their PMs. Stamena, do you know how many weeks post op your student is? I've heard 6, but I'm curious. Good luck with your classes. Anna

Hi ABelle
My student joined her first Ashtanga class and everything went well. She has her PM for many years, she has done some other cardio, so her case is very different from yours. From what i've been very privileged to be exposed at your website, i would recommend that if it is Ashtanga you are longing to go back to - please listen to your body and maybe give yourself another few weeks. Consult with your doctor, when you think you are ready and only than go back. I may be a little overcautious in my thoughts, but your body is your most precious gift that houses your soul - look after it.
What i recommended my student do during her first session was - start slowly and rest any time you feel you losing the rhythm with your breath.
Good luck ABelle, just take the steps one at a time and you'll be back at your favorite yoga class at no time!

ashtanga

by paola - 2011-08-04 10:08:30

I practice ashtanga yoga for about a year and I really like it! Unfortunately for a problem of tachycardia August 18 I have to do a surgery to put a defibrillator (ICD) and I am wondering that after I will be able to resume practice or if make some asanas will become impossible. The doctors on this subject have given me no answers; They said me that sport activity can be resumed but is important to avoid contact sports. But nobody knows ashtanga so well to suggest me what can I will do in safety. I would like to recover my ashtanga practice as much as I can .......... Thank you so much and sorry for my bad english

Hi

Could anybody give me an update on the Ashtanga practice with ICD- the last post was a long time ago. I had an ICD implanted last week and as soon as all clear from the doctor in 4-6 weeks i want to resume my yoga practice, i did lots of Flow classes, rocket yoga and ashtanga. I would love to return to those , also any advice on inversions would be greatly appreciated !

I had a pacemaker when I was 11. I never once thought I wasn't a 'normal kid' nor was I ever treated differently because of it. I could do everything all my friends were doing; I just happened to have a battery attached to my heart to help it work.
