I am a 22 year old Female and haven't met too many younger people with pacemakers - I am still in the pediatric ward at my hospital so haven't felt too comfortable asking my doctor but have always been curious if there are any major risks or complications with pregnancy and having a pacemaker. (I'm not pregnant but it would be nice to know for my future).
I am 100% dependent on my PM.
Any advice or personal stories would be appreciated :)
Thank you!

Welcome!!!! People here are very informative, so if you have any questions don't be shy to ask. No question is dumb either!
I am a 27 year old and I received my PM when I was 22 too. I had also gone through two ablations. I'm due for a PM change at the end of this year or early next year. At 22 I had no children and had the same worries you are feeling now, but am happy to say that I have 2 wonderful children now. All while having my PM. Actually I had my first child a little over a year after my PM was implanted. The PM didn't change a thing for me in regards to giving birth. Actually the doctors didn't even monitor my heart during labor. I had complications with my first pregnancy and ended up having a C-sec after 3 hrs of pushing and then my 2nd pregnancy was a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Ceserean). I have done it all and it went fabulous....in regards to my heart. My kids are healthy and so am I. So don't be nervous to have children. I'm sure you will do great when the time comes. I have move to say, but have to get going. If you have any questions for me you can private message me on here or email me at sweetkozy@hotmail.com. Welcome again!!! Don't be shy now!
Cheers:)

I've had a pacemaker since I was 8. I am 51 now.
I had 4 children without any problem and all natural births as well. Ocourse, they kept an eye on me while I was delivering and throught out each pregnance but I was fine. Take my work for it your future looks fine....

Hi Angie,
Welcome to the site. I am also 22 and it was the very first question that I asked my drs. I believe it is a common question. I plan on having children someday when I am more stable. I look forward to talking to you more and hearing more of your story.

Hello all !
I know I am really late, however I was searching the web for answers!
I am 25 years old and have had a Pacemaker fitted since I was 16 months old. I am completely dependant on my PM and have recently thought about trying with my husband for a family but had so many questions, plus the fact I am due a battery change any time now.
You have all completely put my mind at rest! Thank you so much!!

My ICD/pacer is not a burden. I still play tennis and golf.

Hi Angie,
I have had a pacemaker consistently since I was 10 years old, intermittently before then. I had my son at 28 and there were no complications as a result of my condition. I had to be followed in the high-risk obstetrics clinic but, aside from that, everything was normal. Back before they had demand pacers - old ones just kept your heart going at the same rate regardless of the activity you were doing - they had to connect you to the interrogation machine and speed up your heart rate "manually" (for lack of a better term) as your labor progressed. Thank God for technological advances, huh?!
If you have any further questions or concerns, feel free to email me!
