Hello, My 2 yr old daughter has a PM and has had it for almost 2yrs now come August 2011. She just had her pacer check done the other day which were told that one of the leads had come loose due to some pressure. (most likely from when had cold and coughing a lot). Does anyone know if surgery is really necessary when they say that she has been doing fine on just the 1 lead alone for the last 2 months.
Thank you

doctors call

I think its the doctors call on this one. It depends on which lead came out, from which end, and what portion of her heart doesn't work.
When I had my first PM put in, I woke up from surgery early and coughed, which dislodged one of the leads they had just put in.
It was decided that because it was not the one that I really needed (they install the whole thing regardless), it was not worth going back in to fix it.
Miraculously though, I few months later when I had my first check up, the lead had worked its way back to where it was supposed to be. The doctors couldn't explain it. God's grace. (I realize this section doesn't help you, but that's the end of the story) *shrug*
Talk to the doctor about all the why's of going back to surgery. Also, fine for right now, doesn't mean fine for later. As her body grows it will put different demands on the PM.

Many of us have two leads but really only use one. The other is there to provide information. If she's doing ok without it, I'd talk to the dr about watching instead of fixing immediately.
1 lead

Hi, my son is 7 and his pm has only one lead. They want to put 2 in eventally, but thought to start with one so there would be one less to change when he needed them replaced. made sense to me. He is thriving with 1 lead. every case is different of course, but if you can put off a surgery makes sense to try. Kiss to the little one! Sharon
