I have had my ICD combination PM for a week and I am so afraid that I am going to be shocked when I least expect it. Naturally its going to be when I least expect it but I am afraid that it will be a malfunction shock. Anybody have any advice about getting over the fear. Its doesn't stop me from my daily activities, its just on my mind.

How long have you had your device?
by walkerd - 2011-07-07 07:07:28
Ive had mine for almost 3 years and think about it once in awhile not like I used to and I dont dwell on it. You will get there to if you havent had yours for very long. I dont wish to have it go off but if it does it does for a reason to keep my heart going. You will get over it, but you will always think about it but it wont be so bad after awhile. Think positive or at least try to and do things that take your mind of it, keep busy and dont just sit around thinking about it, your mind is a powerful tool to either drive you nuts or help you get on. Good luck and just try not to dwell on it keep active on something else, typeing on here and surfing other sites helped me greatly.

Inappropiate Shocks
by Laben - 2011-07-07 12:07:18
Hi Bill, I am on my fifth DF and have had them for soon to be eighteen years. Out of 19 or so shocks only 2 were caused by other than fast HR (most of the others were from my activities that got my rates up and the DF did what it was programed to do). the 2 that I mentioned were from AC current due to a faulty ground in my home. I have done and been around most everything and life is good. Hopefully you will never have a problem. Bottom line, I don't have to like it and I am glad to be here with the grandkids.
Stay positive.

I have had one for 4 1/2 years and has never fired and I don't even think about it. If you need it you will be glad that you had it. Just forget about the ICD and you will be better off.
Over a year and over it

Hi,
It has been over a year now and I do believe that I am over the fear. I too hardly think about it anymore! Thanks for the advice.

I don't have an ICD, but can understand the feeling of an impending jolt could be unsettling. The nearest I can come to it is sleeping with a window open during a lightning storm, and wondering when the next loud bang is coming.
