Backpack Straps

Anyone had any experience wearing a backpack? I am going to do some serious hiking, and I would like to know if I need to be worried that the shoulder strap will go just about over my pacemaker.

We're all built differently, pacers are placed differently, and backpacks vary. Some of them will go over it, it may or may not be comfortable. Try it and see. My pm is buried pretty well so I've never had a problem with packs but I know others have had to shop around to find something that works. Good luck and have fun!

And post pictures!! It's my personal mission to have the pictures of members out having fun outnumber the pictures of scars and hospital beds ;o)

back packs

This last weekend I tried with a lightish pack and it didn't seem too bad for a couple of hours--but I am pretty sure that a heavier pack and a longer hike would have created discomfort.
I am wondering about a large butt pack. I have seen some North Face ones in REI with space for two bottles and a medium size pouch. I might give that a try.

Hike a lot

and my pacemaker protrudes a lot. My left strap goes right over my PM. I hike in mostly mountainous terrain in NH. I put a sheepskin auto seatbelt cover (readily available) around the strap and when the pack is heavier (for example if carrying more than 2L of water) I don't clip the sternum strap closed. That works for the most part, but I do feel irritation sometimes, especially in warmer weather when my shirt is thin.
I also follow a routine for putting on the backpack- lift the pack high with my right arm so I can slip my left arm into the strap without effort.
Now that the PM seems to have self adjusted to my excersize level I can enjoy hiking again. Hope you will too.

waist packs

I have one similar to the link below I love for short to medium day hikes. It's not as hot as the backpack in the summer. It's not good for long hikes because it doesn't hold much more than two large bottles of water, first aid kit and some bars.

I'd be wary if it was at all uncomfortable after a few hours. Talk to the folks at REI. I don't think there's a store with better trained or more helpful staff. You can even return it if it doesn't work out.

I like the idea of the lambskin seat belt cover.
Talking about seat belts--I have lived in England a lot over the last three years, and when I rent a car there, the seat belt is uncomfortable over the PM. I have this vision of a very sudden stop that slamms the PM against the seat belt.
