pulse change
I had a Medtronic ICD implanted Oct.3, 2011. I test my oxygen and pulse with a oxymeter everyday. Suddenly two weeks ago my pulse (normally between 97 and 88 has changed to between 52 and 44. I don't feel any different. What could be the reason?

Thank you so very much for your fast response, Don. I feel so much better now. Having an ICD implant is anxiety enough. My oxygen number hasn't changed at all. It's only the pulse that has changed. I just tested again. The oxymeter immediately reads a higher number and then drops after a few seconds, but stays at the lower number until I turn it off and then retest. Your explanation was clear and I could understand what's happening. Thank you....thank you.

A POSSIBLE Explanation

It happened to me almost the same way.
Notice that the new pulse rates are almost exactly 1/2 of the values you had before.
It's possible you are having a significant number of PVC's (Premature Ventricular Contractions). With PVC's the automated device may not pick up the pulse that comes early, hence giving you half the normal.
It's unusual that you don't sense the abnormality, but everyone does not.
To find out if you are having PVC's, first take your pulse w/ the oxymeter. If it registers about half of what you consider normal, take it by human fingers, which are more sensitive than the device. If you have PVC's you would feel THUMP, thump, THUMP, thump. The lighter feeling pulses are the PVC's. They are not dangerous, but can be annoying.
BTW: Are your oxygen numbers remaining the same? If so, your HR PROBABLY is not 1/2 normal!
