HI hope all is well, I recently purchased a Garmin Vivosmart HR which has a built in Heart rate monitor on the wrist band just letting all those who are interested in this product that the device is very accurate while using. I have a Garmin edge 810 while I'm bike riding and this does play ( chest trap ) up a lot when I ride so I use a Polar FT 1 ( chest strap ) and this works fine. I hope this Information might help a few if you are deciding to purchase this product.

The chest sensor consists of 2 parts. The fabric/plastic chest strap and the sensor module. (In a few older designs the sensor and strap are one).
The sensor snaps onto the strap and transmits a signal to the wrist or bike display. Garmin use a system called ANT+
The older Polar (such as the FT1) haves and coded analog signal. They are not compatible with Garmin. The newer Polar (and some others) use Blue Tooth 4.0 (LE).
However., the Polar fabric straps can be used with the Garmin (or other brand) sensor modules to work Garmin displays. Many people think that the Polar straps are the best. Specially the newer soft straps. They are available separately as a replacement item and are on Amazon.
Also there are a number of other optical HR monitor/sensors beside the Vivosmart HR.
Fitbit Surge and Charge HR.
Scosche RHYTHM+ This is an armband that replaces chest straps. It transmits both ANT+ and BlueTooth signals.
The MIO Link is an optical wrist HR sensor that transmits in both ANT+ & BlueTooth 4.0
And the MIO Fuse is an activity monitor with optical HR sensor and also transmits in ANT+/BlueTooth.
Several MIO and Tom Tom GPS watches have similar optical sensors. Note - Almost all optical sensor use MIO licensed designs and/or modules.
