Having an ICD inserted in a few weeks.

Hello Everyone! While I can understand why I need to have an ICD inserted, I find myself in a state of fear, resolve, and disappointment. When I think about the gravity of it all, it makes me so sad. How do I move forward? Thanks in advance.V.

It is scary to most of us at first. When you think that your heart has failed you, there is real fear and disappointment. The ICD will help your heart work well again.

You will move forward, a day at a time, sometimes an hour at a time. It is hard to believe it now, but it will get easier to accept it and eventually embrace it. Especially when you start to feel and breath better.

This is a great site with helpful, caring and knowledgeable fellow pacers/ ICD hosts. Ask any questions you may have here. All are willing to help.

I've said it here before, but I wish I knew about this site before my ICD implant almost 4 years ago now. So you are ahead of the game, you found this site before your implant...good for you. Go up to Search on the right hand side of this site and read all you can.

Take care and keep us posted,

Know that emotional healing is as important as the physical. A lot of drs don't mention that. It's perfectly normal to go through what you're feeling but as you heal and feel good again, the fear should go away on its own. When you think about it, the most dangerous time was before you knew you had a problem. Now you are aware of the problem and soon you'll have a high tech computer for a safety net. It's all uphill from here, it just doesn't feel like it right now. Vent with us all you need, there are lots of ears to listen and shoulders to lean on who've been there and come out the other side.

It's hard in the beginning for some of us. The more you can relax about it, though, and distract yourself with pleasant stuff, the easier it will be.
You'll get support here as you go through the stages. I was kind of a baby the first three months...then it seemed better. Then at nine months the doc had the pm tweaked a bit, so I stopped being woken up by feeling it pace. That made it just fine for me. Now I almost never think about it... Been five years... Unless I realize it saved me from fainting again. Life gets better with pacing.

You know you're wired when...
