I had my pm put in about 3 weeks ago. I need to know if muscle spasms are a normal part of having a pm? I started having these about a week and a half after the pm was put in. I had very sharp throbbing pain a week ago Friday, that my daughter took me to the er at our local hospital. They told me I was having very strong muscle spasms, and that was just my body getting used to the pm. They gave me muscle relaxers, and pain pills. When it starts if I can get laid down on my right side, it almost goes away. Does anyone else have this? Will it ever go away? I have tried heat and ice, and it doesn't seem to help. I am so tired of the pain, and never knowing when it is going to hit. Should I be concerned? Don't want to be labeled a complainer, but this is all new to me, and it really bothers me.

Hello....Oh My Gosh! I HAD THESE SHOCKS/Muscle spasms after my pacemaker was placed sub muscular into my pectoral muscle! Now its my turn to help someone because i had not one Dr know what was happening to me back in 2002. I came here and got my answers! It will take a year for these "shocks" to completely go away! The "shocks" or "spasms" hurt and are scarey ...but its just the nerves and muscles healing! I hope this helps!
call your dr

Was your dr consulted when you were in the ER? I would want to confirm that the leads are in place and the pm is pacing properly, esp since the spasms go away when you change position.
Low salt

By any chance did your Dr talk you into a low salt diet after getting the pacer? This can sometimes cause muscle cramping. Just a thought. The first thing I do if I start getting cramps is to take a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water. Salt would work as well, but the soda doesn't taste as bad. The trick is to raise my sodium level.
My BP isn't affected by sodium so it is no problem for me.

Please check with your Doctor

I agree that you need to check with your doctor and make sure that he/she listens to you and perhaps even gets a PM tech there to check your pacing leads.
It may have nothing to do with it, but I had horrible pain in the middle of my chest that I could "sometimes' find a position in a recliner to stop them. I also had pain under my left breast...... I won't go on and on. I've already done that on my posts in Nov. and Dec. If you want to see more, look me up and see what I wrote.
But.... I did have a misplaced lead and after they reset it, I had NO pain at all. I don't think you should be in pain. I know everyone is different, but please complain and complain and complain if you need. It's being proactive about your health, not really complaining.
Sorry you're going through this. Good Luck.

got things checked out

Well, I went to work on Thursday, Feb 7. Came home took the pain pill and muscle relaxer. Friday Feb.8th went to work, left work at 9 am. called my cardiologist and told them I was in alot of pain. Went into the office, was checked out, and was sent to Deaconess Heart Hospital in Evansville, In. with instructions to not make any stops along the way. I was admitted to the hospital, ans scheduled for surgery on Monday, Feb. 11th. I was on bedrest for the weekend, cause the heart was so irritated. What my local bandaid station hospital said was muscle spasms and getting used to the pm, was actually the lead going thru the heart wall!!! They pulled the lead back into the heart, and re-positioned it. Had the hole that the lead made of not closed, I would have had to had open heart surgery. Luckily it closed and there was not any excessive bleeding.. They still don't know what caused the lead to go thru the heart wall, but I am not allowed to raise my arm above my shoulder for 4 weeks and can't lift anything over 5 lbs for 4 weeks. They want to make sure the lead is planted securely before I do anything.

muscle spasms

My spasms are in the middle left side of my chest. The muscle relaxers help I guess if you call knocking me out helping. Sometimes it is just a spasm/ twitching, but most of the time it is spasm with sharp pains. I can handle the spasm/ twitching, but the spasm with sharp pains I would really like to do without.
