Heart Rate Monitors

Hi all, I wondered if anyone might be able to advise on a suitable heart monitor? I have a Biotronik Dual Chamber PM fitted and use a Garmin Forerunner 110. However, since having the PM fitted the Garmin heart rate monitor no longer functions properly seemingly the PM interferes with the heart rate monitor. Many thanks Dave

I have had a Metronics (sp) for 5 years and never have had any problems. I have a 1 line. My rate is set in the 70's. I have it checked over the phone every 3 months and go to the cardo clinc twice a year and they check me on the big machine. I only see my cardo doctor once a year. They have me on the right meds. Before I got it I was passing out. When I went in the hospital I died 3 times. Once when the ambulance was taking me to the hospital, then in the emergency and the next day they took me down to see if I had any blockage and I died again and that is when the pacemaker was put in me. I was lucky I never had a heart attack or stroke. Strange. but thank God I am still here and feel good. Good luck on finding the right pacemaker for you.

Hi!

For me my Polar FT 7 works very well. I have had an older Polar monitor before, and this also worked great with my pacemaker.

Misunderstanding

Hi ibebkm15,

Dave wasn't referring to the pacemaker model you have, but to a heart rate monitor that one can wear for instance when going running or bicycling, so that one can keep an eye on the heart rate.

Polar for me too

I have a Polar FT 2, no problems. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles that Inga's has but it didn't cost as much either.....LOL. I also had another Polar prior to this one that was very reliable. I have a BS ICD....that's Boston Scientific, not Smitty.

Happy exercising,

I've never found one that works for me. Either the pm interferes and the hrm shows no rate, or the hrm picks up the pm spikes and shows a rate too high. I keep a pulse oximeter in my gym bag but rarely use it. I don't bother counting most of the time, if I feel bad I count manually. The rest of the time, if I feel good I assume the pm is doing its thing.

Hi, I have a St. Jude Pacemaker and am a very keen cyclist.
My Cardio Specialist, who is also a cyclist recommended Garmin 810, apparantly Garmin has done a wide range of testing with St.Jude and a number of other device manufacturers.
Mine works a treat and I have been using it daily since my pacemaker fitment in Jan this year.

Hope all works out for you....

Hello Dave.

I have used a Polar F5 on and off for the past 7 years when cycling to monitor the sensor rates on my current and previous pacemakers (Guidant/Boston Scientific). It is quite basic in its functions, but has worked well. I have found the chest strap has to be really tight, almost uncomfortably so, to ensure dependable results. One snag is Polar's recommendation that it should be returned to them for battery replacement, but I have done it successfully myself - with the help of the internet.

Best wishes,
Philip, from London.

Thanks to you all

Hi all, thank you very much for your time and valued advice. I am looking at the Polar and Garmin 810 models suggested. It seems the Polar marque especially seems compatible with Pacemakers. I had only just started using a heart rate monitor a few months before the implantation. I found it interesting and useful for the running and bike training. Once again thank you for your advice.

Since I got my pacemaker, I don't pass out anymore! That's a blessing in itself.
