antibiotics

My pacemaker was replaced this past Wednesday. The site has been very sore up until this morning; and, thinking more clearly, I have just realized that I was not given any prescriptions for pain or antibiotics. I am not bothered about pain med, but am quite sure I was given antibiotics the after first implant and also find it strange because I must always have antibiotics prior to dental work. I can call the cardio nurse tomorrow, but it will prey on my mind until then. Does this seem strange or could it be possibly an oversight do you think?

Hi It is not normal to give an antibiotics prescription after an implant. Post- PM infection is usually avoided by giving an antibiotic injection at the same time as the local anaesthetic / sedative if the Dr believes in the need for it.

As the op is minimally invasive and short in duration my understanding is that some Drs don't use antibiotic prophylaxis at all.

Post-op soreness is normal and doesn't mean that you have an infection.

I've had 4 replacements, have never been given pain or antibiotics after. Replacements are much less invasive than the original implant. You probably got something in the iv during the surgery.

Hi! On my second ICD, and I have been given two antibiotics for both surgeries, IV Vancomycin and IV Clindamycin. Have been given oral Clindamycin to take at home for a few days, also. Have done well with no infections, inflamation or unsightly scarring. Can you not reach your medical care today to be sure of your care's wishes? I hope you have a trouble free recovery. I'm on my second PM and I was not prescribed antibiotics for home use with either. I don't know what I may have been given through the IV while in the hospital for the outpatient surgery, but the incision site and the bandage were treated to prevent an infection from external sources. It must have worked because I have not had a minutes trouble with either.

I also was required to have antibiotics prior to any dental work, however I was not given a script for any to take at home. They gave me a large dose through the IV before my pm implant surgery and I am doing well as of day 18. Wishing you well,
