hi i was treated to a neck and shoulder massage at my local spa/health centre for a birthday treat recently but when i arrived for my appointment the person booked to do the massage started to fill in a health queationnaire and asked if i has a pacemaker when i replied yes she said she was unable to do a massage without a letter from my consultant agreeing to it because the massage could alter the heart rhthymn. i just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on this subject. thanks all.

Hello Belly321,
Ill give my opinion of what you were told in two words, but so as not to be too offensive Ill only use the first letter of each word and they are B.S. That massage may cause your heart rate to change but your pacemaker sees changes like that every day so I dont see what all the fuss was about.
Now, Ive not had a massage since I got my PM so Ill step aside and wait to see what someone that has a PM and has had a massage has to say.

I've had massages

and I've never had any trouble. Of course they don't massage over the pacemaker, just because this area is always sensitive, but if anything, I have felt better afterwards because they enhance circulation and flush toxins from the body! I guess you could ask your Dr. just to be sure, but I think they are , if anything, beneficial!

I have had numerous massages since having my PM and have never had any problems when telling them I have one. Maybe they had a problem once.....

It's much better to live with a pacemaker than to risk your life without one.

Recently my orthopedic Doctor sent me to therapy for ultrasound treatment on my hips and they would not do it because I have a PM. I even showed them in my Medtronic book where it said it was OK. They would not do it until they got a Fax from my PM doctor saying it was OK.
