Exercise and battery life.

I had my PM check yesterday and my battery life is 8-1/2 yrs. I'm pacing upper 78% of the time and lower 1%.

I have not exercised regularly in the past two yrs. Just occasionally for about a 15 min. workout.

My questions is, would regular aerobic exercise help my pacing rate and extend the battery life?

exercise & battery life

Hi,

I don't think doing aerobic exercise will do anything to help your pacing rate or extend your battery life. Pacemakers only help with electrical problems which have nothing to do with how in shape we are but it will certainly be good for the plumbing part of your heart and that will improve your overall health.

Good luck,

Thanks bluebowtye; that's kind of what I thought.

Yes, I do need to get back into an exercise program just for general health. So, I'm going to work on that.
Thanks again.

Battery life

Your PM battery will run down faster if it is forced to pace more. Looking across the forum you'll see some batteries lasting only three years. Whether those were defective or not wasn't reported. However, the more the battery is used, the faster it will run down.

Medical science with heart disease and heart issues is advancing so rapidly that what you read this week isn't true next week. Dick Cheney had his book published about his heart problems and the book was obsolete by the time it was published. The newest pacemakers are put inside the heart. I'm not even going to try to predict anything because I would be wrong in my assumptions.
Who knows what will be available as a replacement for your pacemaker at the end of its battery life? With all the advances in medical science you may want to replace your PM before the battery runs out. (If your medical insurance will go along with it.)

I had a running argument with the cardiologist nurses at my cardiology rehab. They insisted cardio rehab was the best. My argument was for more of an all round exercise regimen. The latest research I've read has been favorable for all round exercise.

One report published a few years ago indicated that it didn't matter what kind of exercise you did. It only mattered that you exercised. In essence, people who exercised regularly had fewer medical problems, felt better, lived longer.

So please don't worry about the battery in your PM running down. Just get out there, get moving, exercise more.

It's a big world out there. Go out and enjoy it!

If you pace when you exercise, you will pace more if you exercise more. However, pacing is only one of many things that affect battery life so the effect would be negligible. Not exercising will shorten your life, so I would say quit overthinking and just do it! :)

I had a pacemaker since 2002 and ever since then my life has been a total blessing.
