First 5k after PM

PM implanted on October 1st (ablation 5 days before that). Ran my first 5k post implant this morning. I lost 2 minutes on my time but I was just glad to be back in the game. My breathing was fine, my legs just felt weak after almost a month off. I did feel light headed after the run even though I know I was well hydrated. I don't have an upper limit set on my PM and my lower limit is 50. I've been at 51-53 all week. Should I be higher?

51-53 active but non-exercise

I've been just randomly checking my HR while puttering around the house cleaning, cooking, etc ever since implant day so it's not 100% at rest but not exercise. It had been in the mid-60's since implant until this past week when it dropped. They did start me on Toprol 50mg twice a day to help get my BP under control the same time they removed the upper limit of my PM. Could that be the cause of the HR drop?

Don I tried taping my incision/PM like we discussed last week. I used good old fashioned waterproof sweat proof non-stretchy tape but it was no match for the sweat and movement and came loose. I was fine though, ended up not needing it after all.

way to go!

Congrats on completing the run! If you ran and felt good, then odds are pretty good your settings are fine.

Yes, it could cause lower HR

Toprol is Beta Blocker. That is one of the effects of BB's. Note I did not call it a side effect. I take fairly heavy doses of a BB intentionally to lower my HR - 600 mg daily of Acebutolol, which drops me into the 50's. from somewhere in the 70's w/o the med. Also helps keep the old BP under control.

I just got smart & looked at your profile. Nice & complete - I saw your HR history & it told me what I wanted to know. You were naturally quite low, so the new HR in the 50's is OK for you. HR's, BP's Temp's are all the same - they are individually different for all people. Our #1Daughter is a jock & her resting HR is in the forties; for years, my BP was a stable 120/70; My temp has ALWAYS been in the 97.4 range. So someone takes my temp & gets 98.8 & says "Normal temp." My response is always "No, it's over a degree high." That's no big deal till you reach the temps associated w/ infections in the over 100 range.

Glad that you felt well enough w/ the tape sweating off. That must have been some run you took. I never had problems w/ it coming off my shins back before you were born - but I was only sprinting a mere 120 yds. Don't work up much of a sweat in that short effort. An interesting side effect - I had to shave my legs from below the knee to the ankle. Discovered that the first time I had to rip the tape off - OUCH!

Sounds great.

Nice going

Good for you! Your legs will get stronger and your two minute time loss is probably more from being out of practice Han anything. It hasn't even been a month since your pm, I'm impressed!

You sound fine...

...but a question. 51-53 WHEN? At rest? active? Etc.

Do you have any idea what your HR was under similar circumstances pre-PM?

W/the description you gave, it sounds like you are on a winning horse.

Gives me hope

Well done on completing your first 5K so soon after your implant. I am looking forward to getting back into running after my having my pm on 17th October. I have just tried fast walking so far but have set a goal to complete a local 10k race towards the end of January. I am not going to 'race' it but aim to complete it in a respectable time (under the hour). It's good to hear on this site that so many people can continue to run even marathons and half marathons. Having previously completed several marathons (pre PM) it certainly gives me hope.
