I was wondering if anyone has experienced having a lead yanked out. If so, what caused it, what were the symptoms, and what was done about it?
I love riding my horses, but have been told I cannot fall, becuase of the fact I could yank out a lead in the fall. Of course, I don't usually fall off the horse, but I am terrified I might!

but I never did answer your question. If a lead is dislodged, it stops pacing so you'd feel like you did before you got it. If it's less than a year, they can use the same lead, go in and reposition it. After that, you are not going to dislodge a lead but one might stop working. In that case, they put a new one in if it fits. If it doesn't fit, they remove what's there and start new using the laser mentioned above. Leads last on average 15 years but some go double that or more.
who said that?

Once you heal, you are not going to yank out a lead! To be really blunt, whoever said that was ignorant. The first few weeks it's possible (but unlikely!!) that something we do could cause a lead to dislodge. After that, the scar tissue grows and holds the lead in place. They grow in so well that if they do need to come out, it takes a specialized laser to do it. Ride your horses, don't worry about it. I've had hard falls from skiing, I've broken bones, I've ridden roller coasters. I lift weights daily. I'm coming up on 20 years and haven't managed to hurt the pm yet. Live your life.
try searching

Go to search in upper right corner of this site and search on "leads out" or "leads pulled", maybe other variations.
I know there have been many posts on dislodging leads.
Usually after 6 weeks they're pretty well seated in and you can do most exercises. After a year if they need to be moved or removed they usually have to use a laser to cut them out.
I don't know about risks from falling from a horse, but it seems like it would be similar to risks if you're in a car accident. Would you stop driving?

.....cattle feed lot paving!
I suffered an auto accident that was violent enough to partially tear my heart from its moorings. Also gave me 8 broken ribs, a broken collarbone, some internal organ injuries & my head hit a door window hard enough to shatter the window.
Had a new lead implanted a mere ten weeks prior to the accident.
New lead suffered not a bit of damage, nor did the PM show any record of the accident w/ an anomaly in HB.
Both leads still functioning normally after 7 years.
Tracey is 100% correct!
I'd not take up Thai kickboxing or challenge the current WBC heavyweight champ, but otherwise, I'd continue to live, live, LIVE!

leads

I had to to have a both leads repositioned in wk 4 of my PM implant earlier this year. I had no symptoms, was going in for my interrogation and the tech said utoh, first of all your not in any danger, sent me in back for a chest xray and one was loose moving a round like a windshield wiper. Doc says cause was due to the PM dropping significantly in the pocket putting stress on the leads. He re-attached that lead, repositioned the other lead, made a pouch and sold my PM in place and gave extra slack on both leads. I was feeling great when I went in for my 4wk checkup, however 3 hours later I was back in surgery. I am a believer that this was a rare case... He said his first (lucky me)

...4) He either did not suture or did it properly where the little gizmo that precludes the leads from sliding in & out enters the vein. It holds the lead in place & has little wings on it to keep it from moving into the vein.
Just read this one last Wed while perusing the installation manual for my own PM. There are several cautions mentioned in BIG fonts to get the surgeon's attention. Typical man, he just did not red the assembly instructions. I'd like to see what a tricycle looks like that he puts together on Christmas Eve!

My cardio told me that he didn't want me to ride my motorcycle anymore either. He gave me same reply, I might damage the leads if I wrecked.. lol, Object is to stay on 2 wheels while riding and stay on that horse! Have fun! Relax! 5yrs and counting for me!
