Lawsuits against a Munster, IN cardiologist, Dr. Arvind Ghandi, his associates at Cardiologist Associates of Northwest Indiana, and the acclaimed Community Hospital in Munster, In. have hit the television news again over the weekend. There were a lot of lawsuits a year or so ago toward the same people for unnecessary surgeries to implant cardiac defibrillators, and alleging that the doctor did not have the proper credentials to do these implantations. The patients had suffered many injuries and one had to have a heart transplant as a result.
The evening news mentioned more than 20 medical malpractice injury lawsuits and also that the doctors were sued on behalf of the federal government and medicare. Newpaper articles listed this doctor at the top of all Indiana doctors is income from these surgeries and 20th in the nation, with one year's income between $2 and 3 million. More info is available on the web.
This was interesting to me because I live in that general area. Several local doctors interviewed on TV stated that they had notified the hospital of their concerns and were told not to pursue the issue because the doctor was bringing in a lot of money to the hospital. The above are MY remembrances and understandings of the situation.
I was totally happy with my own PM implantation at the U. of Chicago hospitals. I also did a lot of research beforehand and asked a lot of questions. I had turned down a local doctor's (not the one in the lawsuit) offer to implant a PM several months earlier, because I was not secure with the local hospital capabilities and do not find many board certified electrophysiologists registered nearby. NOTE - I am not against doctors in general and have a wonderful working relationship with all of mine. I had just written another post a few days ago of concern for a neighbor who had a bad experience locally with a punctured lung, blood clot, lead not secured, etc. I really don't know how the average individual patient can protect himself.

Evidently this has been going on for more that a decade with unnecessary open heart surgery and unnecessary angiograms, pacemakers and defibrillators. Even 3 wrongful death suits. More patients are coming forward now and being interviewed to find out that present doctors do not feel their surgeries were warranted. One man had 10 angiograms and 5 pacemaker implants, all deemed unneeded.

I am just grateful to God that I lived long enough to have my ICD put in. So many people are not as lucky as us; even though we sometimes don't feel lucky.

Hope this is not the norm. Are criminal charges being filed as well as malpractice.
