OK folks. I am now a Heart Rate monitor expert - just kidding but I do have some really good information to share. After reading a bunch of opinions on heart rate monitors, I decided to buy a Garmin 310XT. It uses a chest band to pick up the electrical signals from your heart (like most of them do) to measure heart rate. It seemed to be working fine; it read my heart rate accurately at rest so why wouldn't it be accurate when exercising? In fact the unit says it is more accurate as you warm up. I know some folks posted that the chest-band type monitors were either not working, not accurate, or double counting. When I printed out the plots of my heart rate, I could see that my PM increased correctly in the rate response mode, but during the most stressful part of my exercise, my heart rate would decrease. I learned that the way these chest mounted sensors work is that they look for the electrical peak signals and count those. In my case, the peak electrical signal from the PM was less than my natural electrical peak. When I was at rest, or not exercising that strenuously, my PM was actually not pacing me. I was relying on my natural heart rate. The monitor tuned itself to that peak. When I increased my HR, I went into AV block much more frequently hence the PM was pacing me frequently. Since the HR monitor only counted the peaks that were a few percent within the "tuned peak" it wasn't counting the other peaks. I returned the unit and bough the just-released TOM TOM unit. It doesn't use a chest strap, nor does it try and sense electrical signals. It uses two bright LED lights and a camera lens mounted on the underside of the watch to illuminate the capillaries and count the beats based on the rhythm of the changing pixels. It works great and has the same features as the garmin such as data storage and the ability to view data plots. It works with MapMyRun to display your route and elevation data too. It carries the same retail price as the garmin unit ($299) but since the garmin unit has been out longer, you can get the garmin from amazon for about $170. There are no such deals for the TOM TOM yet so I paid bust out retail - but I have no issue with the price. I am happy that it works well for my situation.

HR

My rate goes to 150 a little too easily in my opinion, but it works fine. I am 53 so max rate should be 167 and ideal workout rate should be 80% or 133. After my rate is at 150 for a while and I start to experience the normal fatigue of running any distance, I end up naturally slowing my pace and my HR drifts down to around 138 to 140. If I then do wind sprints or try and pick up the pace, I end up right back at 150.

Since you say you're a heart rate monitor expert...
Do these wrist watch monitors have the same problems with arrhythmia causing inaccuracies as the pulse ox/heart rate monitors?

I was kidding about being an expert. I went through 3 different monitors before I landed on the TomTom which worked for me and my condition. I think the key is that the wrist one measures an ACTUAL pulse, not an electrical signal which is supposed to RESULT in a pulse.
who manufactures it

Chris, who manufactures Tom Tom? Is it Nike? I would really like to invest in a great watch monitor; past experience with these wasn't what they claim to do. Give me a few more details as to what you purchased. Thank.

Garmin hr monitor with my 405cx was spot on. They hooked me up for a stress test with hr and Medtronic gadget both matched bpm of Garmin.

Now that you mention it does anyone have a opinion on the heart monitor apps. The ones you put your finger over the camera lens.
You know you're wired when...
You need to be re-booted each morning.

A pacemaker completely solved my problem. In fact, it was implanted just 7 weeks ago and I ran a race today, placed first in my age group.
i will find out tomorrow

we will see...
I use and have been for years a Garmin, when I run and only after the rep turned RR on my HR goes to max 150 stays at that point.. Was told not to run till they They, cardiologist and Medtronic rep can get me on the treadmill and take a look. My appointment was moved up to tomorrow, just wondering if RR sensitivity setting is causing my hr to be 150. Again it only happens when I run, or if the monitor is messing up.. guess I will know tomorrow, if I took a 10 days off from training for nothing.
