We have quite a few runners and other athletes here.

I am very active but way too slow and clumsy to call myself athletic ;)

Runner with issues

by eastcoastcanuck - 2014-06-03 11:06:52

Hey there
I am 39 years old and dealing with heart issues for about 10 years. I have dilated cardiomyopathy, sick sinus syndrome, atrial fib, septal atrial defect, pulmonary valve malfunction and current on bisprolol, bradychardia, etc, inplanted Medtronic advisa pacemaker (mri). I was told last week that my lower chamber now has issues with tachycardia.
I am allowed to run but no sprinting etcs. I'm on this forum to meet fellow runners who have similar issues.
I'm back at the the heart institute in Edmonton in August.

..................this has been said a hundred times, here on PMC......

"We are all so different, ..even with the same condition/s"

Me...I am 64, with a 7 year old replacement Aortic Valve + Pacemaker...I weigh 60kg and am allowed to run my arse off whenever I wish.....like the 4-miler last evening.

Doctors , in my view, often 'Protect' patients by forbidding excersise.....my Doc is a Triathlete and encourages exercise.

I am certainly not telling you to defy expert advice..just get a balanced view on what you can, realistically aim for.

There are plenty of us

Hi,

There seem to be an increasing number of athletic types on here. I have been a life long exerciser, never smoked or been overweight. I was diagnosed with AV block last year and implanted with a PM at the age of 41.

I still run 5 to 6 miles every other day and I cycle my son to school every morning (5 mile round trip).

I do wonder though that if smart watches etc take off in a big way, that a lot of people are going to discover some irregularity with their heart rhythm. A number of studies have been published recently that indicate that too much exercise can be bad for the heart (sort of makes sense if you think about it). So, like everything, moderation is probably key.

James O'Keefe also gives an interesting TED talk on the topic of too much exercise.

Have a poke about on the internet and you will find similar articles.

I have actualy abandoned plans to take part in triathalons as a direct result of researching this issue, but I am happy with my current exercise regime. Most people can't run 100 yards, so I think I am doing OK :-)
