the wand

I showed my card and the lady was rude she started shaking the wand...I kept backing up and said stop.......she said I can wand you below the waist don't worry.....I let her know I wasn't taking any chances.....I had never had my defibular go off...and I sure wasn't taking a chance it would....maybe I over reacted...but it was only out of fear if I did. Was she right as long as she did below the waist I was safe?

Security and your pm

by Suzzy - 2008-05-04 02:05:07

The first time, I had to board a plane after having my pm inserted - the Security seemed a little confused as to what to do. They wanted to wand me but; I flat out told them no. She then wanted to do a pat down right infront of all other passengers. I told her that I have no problem with a light pat down but; it needs to be somewhere more private. So, off we went with another security guard into a little room.

If they are insistant that you be wanded, then they do not know what they are doing. Be sure to tell them you want to speak to someone in charge or someone who knows what they are doing. A line you could use..,,if you wand me, and something happens to me....who do I sue? That usually stops them in their tracks.

Wanded

Report her to her supervisor. I did that after a deputy insisted on wanding me as I entered the County Courthouse. As soon as I got home, I sent an e-mail to the sheriff and he replied quickly and said the male deputy should've called a female for me. He also said he would re-instruct his personnel concerning PMs.

I have flown many airline flights since my PM insertion and always show my card and ask for a pat down.
Not once has a Security Person been rude to me there.

Take care.

I agree with Plumberman

This lady was completely rude and unbelieveable. How ignorant. She had no way to treat you that way when you:

1. Were prepared with your card
2. Asked for the pat down which is your right to do having a device

This lady WAS NOT in the right regardless if she only did/wanted to do the check with the wand from waist down. I wish I could smack the hell out of people like this. Security people should know better but, unfortunately, there are a lot of people like her around. Maybe she has a grumpy personality, had a bad day, or whatever. But she had no reason to take it out on you!

I say, better safe than sorry. Especially when it only takes a moment of their time (I mean, you are the one who has to wait for them!) and is well within your rights to ask for a pat down.

Sorry for the vent,

No Overreaction

I had a similar experience when I attended a recent political rally. The crowd herded me through the security detectors before I realized it and of course my PM set them off. The male guard came at me with the wand and when I refused and showed him my card, he told me that I already went through the worst of it by going through the security detectors and that the wand was "nothing". Ha! We exchanged "pleasantries" for a few minutes and then he finally agreed to have a female guard pat me down. Meanwhile, folks attending the rally probably thought I was an assasin what with all the "pleasantries" and such!

I'm glad you stuck to your guns. Even if wanding below the waist is safe, you couldn't be certain how careful, or well trained that particular guard would be...

I would guess that if the guard herself had a PM/ICD, she wouldn't have even been holding a wand!
Take care

Should be okie.

Wow I cant believe that she did that. I go to the court house at least once a month for dependency court for work and all I do is show them my card and a female officer comes over and pats me down, and I go through. Ive never had any issues with security. I believe that you should be okie as long as she didnt hold the wand over you site. My doctor told me that I could want through the scanner if it was neccesary but not to stand there and walk briskly. So I dont see why it would be a problem if you were just scanned from the waste down. Good Luck. and If it happens again dont be afraid to ask for a supervisor before your scanned.

Different Treatments

by dazburke - 2008-05-05 08:05:32

I’ve been twice to Florida from the UK and I’ve received mixed treatment from Security teams.

On my first trip back in 2005 when leaving the UK I informed the Security staff that I needed patting down due to my PM and the Security team seemed a little confused as to what to do. They wanted to me to go through the metal detector, but I told them that I required a pad down, after waiting a little time a team leader came over to pat me down and then off to Florida.

On the return trip leaving Orlando MCO was a different story very good security staff, did a great job made the hope experience hassle free Well Done Guys.

I had a pacemaker when I was 11. I never once thought I wasn't a 'normal kid' nor was I ever treated differently because of it. I could do everything all my friends were doing; I just happened to have a battery attached to my heart to help it work.
