boston sci question

I have a Boston Scientific k173. I had the tech put the accelerometer on passive, and just use the minute ventilator. After several adjustments it seems to work great. A lot better than the St Jude I had before.

When I get on a strider in the gym on a low setting and use just my left arm, the HR goes to the max 155 within 30 seconds. When I use just the right arm it slows to about 110. I am not breathing hard at all. Is there something wrong with my pacer?

The same thing with rowing exercises. Left arm use shoots it up but right arm only it stays low.

Does anyone have some insight?

This is caused by the minute ventilation sensor. To sense activity it works with transthoracic impedance measurements. This impedance also changes when you use your arm and chest muscles. When I had a minute ventilation sensor, I had this problem, too. Even brushing my teeth sometimes brought my heart rate up. And it did speed up to the max rate in a blink, too. Unfortunately, it's not that easy to solve this problem. You can program the rate response to reacting less aggressively, but that will then apply to all kinds of exercises. Also, it might help to switch the accelerometer back on as there then is a cross-check between the two sensors --> if one senses lots of activity, and the other doesn't, it will not react or at least not respond that aggressively. That's the theory. I had both sensors on, and I still had the problem with arm movement (but I did not have a Boston, I had a Sorin pacemaker).

Good luck!

I had a pacemaker when I was 11. I never once thought I wasn't a 'normal kid' nor was I ever treated differently because of it. I could do everything all my friends were doing; I just happened to have a battery attached to my heart to help it work.
